Higgins and Spears Score Athlete of the Week Honors

Boulder-- Basketball guard Cory Higgins (sophomore) and women's basketball forward Brittany Spears (sophomore), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of December 1-7. This is the first honor of Higgins' career and the third of the year for Spears, adding to her career total which now stands at four.
Higgins, a Danville, Calif. (Monte Vista HS/The Pendleton School [Bradenton, Fla.]) native, scored a game-high 16 points with a team-high eight rebounds leading Colorado in both categories in the team's 62-46 loss to TCU. The Buffaloes were slow out of the gate on 28.6 percent shooting in the first half on 6-of-21 from the field. Higgins netted 13 of his 16 points in the second half. The sophomore also made 7-of-8 from the free throw line in 38 minutes of play.
Spears, a Pasadena, Calif. (Pasadena/Notre Dame Prep [Mass.]) native, scored 25 points in the Buffs 73-39 romp over the Lady Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Spears shot 11-of-17 from the field. She also totaled a team high 12 rebounds along with teammate Bianca Smith. Spears scored 19 of her 25 points in the first 20 minutes. Spears also notched her ninth career double-double and second this season (25 points, 12 rebounds). She had 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Colorado State. Spears is now averaging 24.8 points at home this season and 21.3 overall.
