Richmond and Grevsgaard Race to CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- Senior skiers Kit Richmond and Maria Grevsgaard, were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of February 18-24. 

This is Richmond's first athlete of the week honor of the year and his career. Grevsgaard moved into a tie with current teammate Lucie Zikova for the all-time lead among skiers with six career awards, she has also has four on the year which is another skiing record.

 

Richmond, a Red Deer, Alberta (Lindsay Thurber) native, swept the men's Nordic crowns with wins in the 10-kilometer freestyle and 20-kilometer classical races at the RMISA Championships. Both races were contested, as he won the freestyle event by four seconds and the classical race, which amounts to a 12.4-mile duel, by 1.8 seconds.  He has three wins this winter and enters next week's NCAA Championships as the No.1 seeded men's cross country skier in the west.


Grevsgaard, a Gello, Norway (Norges Toppidretts Gymnas) native, swept the women's Nordic crowns with wins the 5-kilometer freestyle and 15-kilometer classical races, both in convincing fashion at the RMISA Championships.  Those were her eighth and ninth wins of the season, adding to her all-time CU record of 17. She enters next week's NCAA Championships as the No. 1 seeded female cross country skier in the west.


Others nominated for this week's award were Richard Roby (men's basketball) and Jackie McFarland (women's basketball).

 

Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Senior, San Bernardino, Calif.

Roby averaged 19.5 points and six rebounds in a pair of games in Colorado's 0-2 week. Roby also moved into third place on the school's all-time scoring list, with 1890 career points. Roby netted a game-high 25 points with nine rebounds and three steals in an 87-69 loss to Texas Tech on 9-for-16 shooting. In the Buffs 60-53 loss at Missouri, Roby scored 14 points. His two-game total, he shot 15-for-29 (.517) from the field and his 20-point effort was Roby's ninth 20-plus scoring effort of the season.

 

Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Senior, Derby, Kansas

McFarland moved into third place on Colorado's all-time scoring list as she helped the Buffs defeat No. 15 Kansas State 73-68 last Saturday. McFarland recorded 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 9-of-11 from the free throw line.  She also recorded seven rebounds, four of which were offensive, six assists and one steal in the game.
