Charles and Grevsgaard Race to CU Athlete of the Week Honors

February 05, 2008 | General, Track and Field, Skiing

BOULDER-- Track athlete Hugh Charles (senior) and skier Maria Grevsgaard (senior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 28-February 3. Grevsgaard earned her third athlete of the week honor of the year, and now has five career honors which ties her for the all-time lead among skiers with current teammate Lucie Zikova. Charles now has four honors on the year which ties him for fourth all-time in single-year athlete of the week honors and five for his dual sport (two in football and three in track) career.

Charles, a Keller, Texas (Keller) native, led the CU men to a third-place finish at the Air Force Invite Feb. 1-2. Charles placed first in the long jump and second in the 60-meter dash to record 18 points for the Buffs. Charles recorded a personal best and the fourth best jump in school history with a leap of 25-03.25. The mark was his second provisional qualifying mark in as many weeks. In the 60, he finished with another personal record of 6.77 in the finals. He recorded a mark of 6.80 in the prelims, placing first.

Grevsgaard, a Geilo, Norway (Norges Toppidrettsgymnas), won both the classical and freestyle races at the Western State Invitational, helping CU earn a four point lead in the team standings with one event remaining. The wins were her 13th and 14th at Colorado and broke a tie with Per Kare Jakobsen for the most individual wins in the 59-year history of the CU ski team. Jakobsen, also a Norwegian like Grevsgaard (he was from Trondheim) claimed 13 cross country events from 1988-90.

With the six straight wins, Grevsgaard has the longest individual streak by a CU skier since 2006, when Jana Rehemaa, now CU's assistant Nordic coach, won the last six races of the season. The school record for the most consecutive wins is eight, by Nordic skier Line Selnes in 1998, her only year in the CU program. Those eight came in the first eight races of the year, the school mark for the most consecutive wins to start a season.
