Colorado- Iowa State Quotes

March 01, 2008 | Men's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik

GENERAL ?“You're right, it hasn't been what any of us would have wanted as far as wins and losses go.  At the same time, there has been so much progress made with this program with facilities and player development.  All three of these young men (Richard Roby, Marcus Hall and Marcus King-Stockton) always kept a positive approach and I never had a problem with any of them in any way, shape or form.  Their leadership and integrity have been exceptional and that is why this team has remained competitive and kept their competitive spirit all season.”

ON THE SENIORS?“I told them two things before the game.  One, don't focus on scoring, make your mark on defense, boards, staying within the scheme and playing with a relentless, unmatched effort.  To hold a team to 55 points and 32 percent shooting it shows that you played with great defensive effort.  Our defense allowed us to get out and run and that was a big part of our game plan.”

ON MARCUS KING-STOCKTON'S DEFENSE?“He was very active today, he really was.  One thing about Jermyl (Jackson-Wilson) and Marcus King-Stockton is that they are very quick and athletic defenders.  We've been working with him on fouling less.  He has come out just as aggressive and picked up fouls because he plays with his hands too much and not his feet.  Against Iowa State earlier this year he had a great defensive possession but bailed out his man late in the shot clock by fouling him.  He just has to stay in the games, he picks up some fouls on both ends of the court?like today he picked up a foul or two setting screens.  Just keeping him in the game is the real answer to why he had such a strong defensive game today.”

Iowa State Head Coach Greg McDermott

GENERAL ?“We didn't start the game out well and we didn't start the second half well. We've tried to pride ourselves in that this season, but we didn't do that tonight. At times we played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm and at times we didn't. We turned it over a lot the first 13 or 14 possessions, but we were right where we wanted to be at the half.”

ON CURRIE AND BOOZER?“We wanted them to come in and give us a lift. We wanted to give some guys an opportunity that have been working hard in practice. I thought they did a good job.”

ON BOUNCING BACK FROM LOSS?“It's a long season and losing's no fun, but we have to put what's happened in the rear view mirror.”

ON ROBY AND HALL?“They're really good off the dribble. Marcus made some tough plays in the paint and hit some tough three's. They made plays that you would want a senior to make.”

ON PLAYING A LOT OF GUARDS?“We played with a lot of guards out there tonight to try to match some of their quickness.”

Colorado Players

Senior Forward, Richard Roby

GENERAL - “It was a great win and I'm just proud to be a part of this team. We just have to play every game like that, with that type of intensity.”

ON STAYING TO PLAY HIS SENIOR SEASON - “I've grown a lot as a player this year, especially in my decision making and shot selection. You have to learn how to play in a system at the next level and I learned how to do that this year.”

ON WINNING HIS LAST HOME GAME - “It was definitely fun, especially to go out with a win. It's fun when you win when you play your hardest and know that you earned it; that was the best part about it.”

Senior Guard, Marcus Hall

ON WINNING HIS LAST HOME GAME - “It feels good, I envisioned a win today, and that's what we wanted to do and we got it.”

ON KEEPING THE LEAD IN THE SECOND HALF - “We just had to keep our composure. Today was definitely far from first time we've been in that situation. We have had leads in almost every game in second half this year, and we kept our composure and stayed together as a team today.”

ON SHOT SELECTION - “We stress everyday about taking good shots, and for most part we were able to get things to go toward the rim. Any time you go toward basket you are either going to get a good look or draw a foul, and tonight we did that.”

Senior Forward, Marcus King-Stockton

ON HIS IMPROVED DEFENSE THIS SEASON - “The coaches have done a good job with teaching me how to play post defense this. I try to take away their moves so I can come back and block their shots.”

Iowa State Players

Freshman Guard, Diante Garrett

GENERAL?“We beat them last time we came here and we were trying to see if we could get another ?W' and get back on track. They came out on fire and they played with a lot of energy. I don't really know what we did wrong?the defensive end hurt us. We weren't communicating enough on defense and they killed us off the dribble. It's a tough loss because we beat them before, but we just have to practice hard and get better.”

ON HALL AND ROBY?“We were just trying to close out on them and keep an eye on Hall and Roby to try to stop them.”
