Pifer Named Big 12 Athlete of the Week
March 25, 2008 | General, Track and Field
IRVING, Texas-- University of Colorado senior Stephen Pifer was selected the Big 12 Track & Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the league's offices on Tuesday afternoon. This was Pifer's first Big 12 Track & Field Athlete of the Week honor and his second overall (he was awarded the honor in cross country in 2007).
In earning the honor, Pifer broke a 22-year-old Potts Field record in the 1,500-meter run at the Potts Invitational on March 22. Pifer led the pack the whole way, coming in at 3 minutes and 47.75 seconds. He finished a full 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Patrick Sullivan (3:57.83).
The former 1,500-meter record was 3:48.25; set by Paul Larkins of Oklahoma State at the Big Eight Outdoor Track & Field Championship in 1986.
This was Pifer's first race of the 2008 track season. He hadn't competed since the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships in November.
Pifer's time is the best in the Big 12 this season; and with the altitude conversion it is the top mark in the nation.
Colorado is back in action this Saturday, March 29, at the Rob Upton Invitational at Colorado State.
