April 09, 2008 | General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Women's Golf
BOULDER-- Men's golfer Riley Andrews (freshman) and women's tennis player Gleisy Torres (senior) were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of March 31-April 6. This is the first athlete of the week honor for both Andrews and Torres Torres.
Andrews, a Highlands Ranch, Colo. (Thunder Ridge) native, finished fourth in the Colorado School of Mines Spring Invitational March 31-April 1, the first collegiate action of his career. Andrews was tied for third after a 77 in Sunday's round on the 7,601-yard, par-72 Bear Creek Golf Club course; Monday's play took place at 6,808-yard, par-71 Fox Hollow Golf Course, literally on the other side of the highway from Bear Creek. He shot a 1-under 70, tying for the third best score on the day, giving him a 147 score overall and a fourth place finish, two strokes behind medalist Stephen Bidne of Northern Colorado.
Andrews scored the third most birdies, eight, in the meet, led all golfers in par-5 scoring (4.57) and was second in par-3 scoring (3.00). His fourth place finish was the best by a freshman in his first CU tournament since the 1999-2000 season, when Tobias Forsgren won the Colorado State Invitational (also shortened to 36 holes), where Kane Webber also tied for third.
Torres, a Barquisimeto, Venezuela (Las Colinas) native, went 1-1 for the week becoming only the 14th woman in school history to win 70 career singles matches. Torres defeated Texas' Stephanie Davison, 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles position, claiming her fifth Big 12 win of the spring and her 15th of the year. Her singles win was the lone point tallied in the 6-1 loss to No. 14 Texas, 6-1.
Torres is the third student-athlete in this decade to eclipse the 70-win plateau. Kendra Strandemo was the first to perform the feat from 2001-05, followed by Jessica Vanderdys from 2002-06. Vanderdys and Strandemo are 11th and 12th, respectively on CU's victories list with 72 and 71 triumphs. Torres is in sole possession of 14th place on the school's all-time wins list. In doubles, she teamed with freshman Abbie Probert for a 9-8 win at No.3 against Texas.
Others nominated for this week's award were Stephanie Simich (women's golf).
Women's Golf: Stephanie Simich, Freshman, Mississauga, Ontario
Simich was CU's top individual finisher for the third time this spring, taking 14th place with a 77-69-77-223 at the Sacramento State Invitational. She helped lead the Buffs to an eighth place finish.
