Buffs Beat Air Force 1-0 in Exhibition

August 17, 2008 | Soccer

Colorado Springs - The University of Colorado women's soccer team got the 2008 season off to a good start here Sunday afternoon, topping Air Force 1-0 in Colorado Springs.

The game was an opportunity for the Buffs to get playing time for some of the 11 newcomers before the regular season games get started next week in Boulder.  While the younger players did show some nerves, Hempen and his squad were happy with how the team came together and battled with Air Force and they're excited to get the season underway.

"It was a good opportunity for the kids to get out there and play somebody different," said Hempen.  "Overall, it was a good effort and a great chance for us to lock down who our starting 11 will be against Florida."

Senior Nikki Keller scored the game-winner for Colorado in the second half and the Buffs were able to hold off Air Force for the remainder of the contest and take home the 1-0 win.

Colorado will take the win and continue to work on some areas that still need improvement in order to be ready for the season opener.  The Buffs have less than one week before they kick off the regular season with a game against No. 20 Florida on Friday, Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. at Prentup Field.  CU will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Aug. 24 when they face in-state rival Denver at 3 p.m.
