Stewart and Milewski Named CU Athletes of the Week

September 23, 2008 | Cross Country, Football, General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Volleyball

BOULDER-- Football tailback Rodney Stewart (freshman) and tennis player Monica Milewski (senior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of September 15-21. This is the third time this year that the honor has been awarded to a member of the football team, and the first time from tennis. This is Stewart's first career honor, and it is Milewski's fifth career honor, the most by a women's tennis player.

Stewart, a Westerville, Ohio (Brookhaven) native, led the Buffs rushing attack against No. 21 West Virginia with 28 rushes for a total of 166 yards on the ground. Stewart also recorded three catches for 16 yards. His nine first downs (eight rushing, one receiving) helped Colorado pick up key yards in CU's 17-14 overtime win.  His 5-yard rush in overtime set up Aric Goodman's game winning field goal.

Milewski, a Park Ridge, Ill (Main South) native, won the singles main draw in the six-team Colorado Invitational. Milewski then teamed with Camila Belassi to win the doubles main draw. Throughout the tournament Milewski pulled off a perfect 9-0 record, winning her four singles matches all in straight sets, the registered five more doubles victories with Belassi over the three day event. Milewski has now moved into 20th place on the school's all-time wins list with 61 and her five doubles victories moves her into 11th place on the all-time list with 53.

Others nominated for this week's award were Patrick Grady (men's golf), Chris Pannone (cross country), Alex Penewell (volleyball), Aislinn Ryan (cross country), Michelle Wenino (soccer), and Emily Childs and Emily Talley (women's golf).

Men's Golf:  Patrick Grady, Senior, Broomfield, Colo.

Grady captured his first collegiate win, leading from wire-to-wire as his final round 68 gave him a 12-under total of 204 for the tournament, tying the individual school record for the most strokes under par. Grady matched John Lindberg's score in the 1989 BYU Classic in Provo; the Swede posted scores of 66, 71 and 67 en route to his 12-under 204. Grady tied for the most birdies in the tournament, 16, and had just four bogeys and no doubles in 54 holes of play while playing the par-4 holes a tourney best 8-under.

Men's Cross Country:  Chris Pannone, Senior, Whitehouse, N.J.

Pannone earned his best career finish by placing second overall at the Iowa State Invite on Saturday. He finished the 8k course in 25 minutes, 58.67 seconds. Clayton Carper (ISU) won the race in 25:27.69. This is the first time in Pannone's career that he has been the top CU harrier to cross the finish and he looks to be one of the top runners in 2008.

Volleyball:  Alex Penewell, Freshman, Newport Beach, Calif.

Penewell made her first career start in CU's Big 12 Opener match against Kansas. She led the Buffs to their first five-set win since 2006 by leading the team in kills, hitting %, blocks and points. Penewell recorded 14 kills (2.80) and hit .600 (14k-2e-20att) while posting eight block assists (1.60) and 18.00 points.

Women's Cross Country:  Aislinn Ryan, Junior, Warwick, N.Y.

Ryan led the CU women's team at the ISU Invite on Saturday. She was the ninth racer to cross the finish in 22:22.00. Iowa State's Lisa Koll ran unattached and won the 6k course in 21:06.00.

Soccer:  Michelle Wenino, Senior, Aurora, Colo.

Wenino scored her first goal of the season in the 4-1 win over Fresno State on Sunday.  She was the rock of the CU defense all weekend, limiting opponents to just 20 shots in two matches, and only two of which were on goal.

Women's Golf:  Emily Childs (Alameda, Calif.) and Emily Talley (Napa, Calif.), Freshman

Colorado's freshman duo has entered the National Golfweek individual rankings in the top-50 as Childs is ranked No. 21 individually and Talley is 46th.  This marks the first time that CU has had two freshmen enter the top-50 individual rankings in school history.  The pair recorded back-to-back top-10 finishes in their first two collegiate tournaments this season.  Childs finished second in the CSU Invitational, while Talley finished in a tie for seventh.  Most recently, in the New Mexico Invitational, Childs took seventh while Talley closed the tournament in a tie for 10th.
