Soccer Suffers 2-1 Road Loss To Baylor
October 04, 2009 | Soccer
WACO, Texas -Â The University of Colorado women's soccer team suffered its first Big 12 loss here Sunday, dropping a tough second-half battle to Baylor University, 2-1.
With the loss, Colorado falls to 7-6-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Big 12, while Baylor improves to 5-3-3 and 1-2-1 in Conference play.
Sophomore Kelly Butler took the first shot of the game early on, attempting to get the Buffaloes offense to pick up where it left off on Friday afternoon when CU used a five-goal effort to top the Oklahoma Sooners 5-1. Unfortunately, Butler's shot was saved by BU goalkeeper Gianna Quintanna.
Freshman Lauren Shaner recorded CU's only other shot on goal by the Buffs in the half with under three minutes left to play. Shaner fired a hard shot towards the Bears' goal, and though the goalie was unable to make the save, a Baylor defender stepped up to keep the ball from crossing the line.
Baylor outshot the Buffaloes six to four in the first half, with both goalkeepers racking up two saves apiece.Â
The Bears would take the lead in the 70th minute of the game when Lisa Sliwinski chipped a left-footed shot over the head of Colorado goalkeeper Kara Linder. The goal proved to be just the second goal that the Buffs have allowed in five Conference games.
Senior forward Nikki Marshall, who led Colorado with four goals on Friday against Oklahoma, continued to pressure the Baylor defense and tried to get the Buffs on the board in the 77th minute, but her shot was blocked.
Just one minute later, however, it would be sophomore midfielder Kassidy Fitzpatrick who would tie the game for the Buffaloes. Fitzpatrick netted her fourth goal of the season after taking a hard shot that was too much for the Baylor keeper to handle, and it went through her legs and into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
The Bears once again proved that they were out for a victory and in the 85th minute they were awarded a corner kick. Bethany Johnston stepped up to take the kick and sent a dangerous ball into the middle of the Colorado box and it was Christine Clark who found her way to it and got her body behind the CU defense, and put the ball in the goal for the eventual game-winner.
Baylor wrapped up the game outshooting Colorado 15 to nine, and put eight of its shots on goal to CU's four. Marshall led the Buffs with three shots and Butler had two, both on goal.
Colorado will hit the road again next weekend and face Missouri on Friday, October 9, at 6 p.m., followed by Kansas on Sunday, October 11, at noon.
