Golfers Finish Sixth In Oregon Invitational

Golfers Finish 11th At UCLA's Gifford Collegiate

November 11, 2009 | Men's Golf

SAN MARTIN, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team had hoped to make a statement in its final round of the fall, but instead regressed a bit and closed out the first half of its 2009-10 schedule with an 11th place finish here Wednesday in the 5th Annual UCLA Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle.

No. 2 Stanford held of top-ranked Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys could only shave two strokes off the Cardinal lead as it won with a 1,056 team total.  OSU finished with 1,059, followed by No. 6 Augusta State in third (1,061), UCLA (1,067) and Duke (1,073) to round out the top five.

Colorado, ranked No. 84, had an outstanding second round and hoped to build on it, but wound up tying for the worst score in the 14-team field for the final round.  The 22-over par total of 382 dropped the Buffaloes from ninth into 11th with a final total of 1,104, though CU still defeated three top teams in Northwestern, Ohio State and Long Beach State.

Senior Justin Bardgett entered the day in second place, two shots out of the lead, but got off to a rough start with three bogeys on his first four holes; starting the shotgun format on No. 11, he was six over after nine before finishing up even down the stretch for a 6-over 78 on the 7,169-yard, par 72 CordeValle Resort Golf Course.   He had three birdies on the day to give him 16 for the week, but endured his only double bogey when he scored a 6 on the par-4 17th.  He closed with a 3-under 213 score that tied him for 15th in the standings.

“We got off to a slow start and never made any significant run at recovering,” head coach Roy Edwards said.  “We made way too many big numbers and were unable to take advantage of the par fives.  There are definitely some positives and negatives to take from this week.  Prior to today, our last five rounds (that covered three tournaments) were our five best overall rounds of the season.  We have a sour taste in our mouths that we can either use to motivate us or we can feel sorry for ourselves.”

Sophomore Sebastian Heisele posted CU's best round of the day, a 1-over 73, playing fairly steady with three birdies, two bogeys and a double.  He tied for 46th with a 5-over 221 total.  CU's other four players all shot 75 or higher to close the tournament, with junior Michael Imperato (76-222) and sophomore Derek Fribbs (75-224) recording CU's two next best scores and finishing 50th and 57th, respectively.

The Buffaloes now go into their annual three-month hibernation and will resume the 2009-10 season the first week of February in the Mauna Lani Invitational in Big Island, Hawai'i.

“I am confident Justin will not let the guys feel sorry for themselves and will move forward to get better,” Edwards said in putting a wrap on the fall season.  “To improve and make a run at making the NCAA Championships, we will have to eliminate big numbers, work diligently on our wedges and short game, and gain more confidence.  We have already started working on all of these.”
