Houston Finding Her Role
November 15, 2009 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER-The University of Colorado's women's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a 61-56 come-from-behind win over the UC Irvine Anteaters Sunday afternoon at the Coors Events Conference Center.
After redshirting during the 2008-09 season because of a preseason knee injury, Whitney Houston reclaims her spot on the court as starting point guard. Today marked her 21st career start wearing black and gold. Before the game, head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller annoucned that Houston was named one of the three captains for this season, by a team vote. Brittany Spears and Bianca Smith will accompany her as team leaders.
"My goals are to be a good leader and a good point guard," Houston said.
Houston put up 11 points and two steals for the Buffaloes. Her two-point bucket with 1:38 left in the second half gave CU its first lead of the game (52-54), and she quickly turned around to hit a three-pointer at the top of the key to extend the Buffs' lead to 57-52.
"I have seen moments where I have been surprised how quickly and effectively she has come back, but we need a more consistent Whitney Houston," coach McConnell-Miller said.
Houston had three turnovers with no assists today in her first game back at point guard.
"I think right now, she is really just trying to find herself, find her role, and figure out the expectations we have for her," coach McConnell-Miller said. "We need more leadership, we need more control of the ball, and we need more control of the tempo from her."
