Colorado, Oregon State Quotes

December 05, 2009 | Men's Basketball

Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik

On the loss

"It was very disappointing; we certainly had our opportunity to win this game. First of all, we didn't contain the ball very well. There were three or four things defensively, but you've got to get down and guard. Then you have to get down and guard without fouling and we just bailed guys out. I thought we were very selfish defensively; we wouldn't help one another, we wouldn't talk to one another, we had too many gaping holes in our defense. Then when they missed, we couldn't rebound the basketball. We can't have certain guys play and not get a defensive rebound in extended minutes. We need to strike first and drive people back and we work on that every day, but we just stand there and watch and let Charlie get it, but we don't have Charlie on our team. Then we had some opportunities. We had a wide-open look at a three and we had a couple free throws; we missed some timely opportunities to score and put some pressure on them."

On toughness

"We had opportunities at the rim and we just whipped it up there. It's just what I told them after the game: toughness. What is toughness? Toughness is getting down and guarding people. Toughness is helping each other defensively, taking a charge. We only took one today and all they did was drive the ball. Toughness is blocking people off. Toughness is finishing at the rim and right now, to be quite frank, that is the difference between would-haves, could-haves, and should-haves. This was a golden opportunity to come away with a win here on somebody else's home court, but we didn't do it. Until they wake up and get tougher, it's not going to happen."
