February 07, 2009 | Cross Country
DERWOOD, Md. — University of Colorado freshman Martin Medina took 27th overall in the men's junior race at the USA Cross Country Championships.
Medina finished the 8k race in 25 minutes, 49 seconds. This was his first cross country race in a CU uniform as he did not compete this past fall for the Buffs. Oklahoma State's German Fernandez won the race in 23:20, a full 19 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Fernandez also won the Big 12 Championship in 2008.
Several former Buffs also competed in the championship. Jorge Torres was one of the top finisher in the men's 12k race. He finished fourth overall with a time of 36:16 and was just seven seconds off the pace of champion Meb Keflezighi, who finished in 36:09.
Ed Torres was eighth in the race, crossing the finish in 36:45. Recent CU graduates Stephen Pifer took 14th (37:18) and Bret Schoolmeester was 22nd overall (38:06).
Tera Moody took 18th overall in the women's 8k. She finished in 29:11.
The IAAF World Cross Country Championships are March 28 in Amman, Jordan. The top three finishers in the men's junior, women's junior and women's 8k race will advance to worlds as well as the top eight men in the 12k race, which includes Jorge and Ed Torres.
