March 13, 2009 | Tennis

BOULDER? The University of Colorado tennis team opened the Big 12 Conference season defeating Oklahoma, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House Bubble.

After dropping the doubles point, Colorado rallied back to pick up all four of their points with singles victories. This is the second time this season the Buffs have lost the doubles point, however rallied back in singles play for the victory.

The win breaks a three-match skid for the Buffs and improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play, while Oklahoma falls to 0-2 in the Big 12 and 6-6 overall.

“We knew coming out it was going to be a tough match, and we really overcame ourselves today on many of the courts.” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.  “It's a good start to the Big 12 season.”

Freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen's victory (7-5, 6-3) clinched the match for the Buffaloes. This marks Hedelund Jensen's first career clinching match and

fifth singles win of the spring season (10 overall).

“I had to stay consistent but aggressive, but not impatiently aggressive,” Hedelund Jensen said. “Everyone worked hard for this win.”

Colorado's win over Oklahoma marks the fifth straight win over the Sooners and fourth straight in Boulder. OU leads the series 18-15.

Junior Melisa Esposito battled Oklahoma's Maria Kalashnikova for three sets (6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3) marking her fourth win in the spring season. Esposito's third set win was her 17th Big 12 match victory in 22 matches.

Sophomore Abbie Probert and senior Franziska Jendrian each tallied straight set wins on Friday and now have won a team-best six singles victories apiece. Jendrian recorded her 24th Big 12 singles victory and her 80th career win overall.

The Buffaloes will host No. 73 Oklahoma State, Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Courts. Sunday's home match will be played outdoors for the first time this season. The doubles competition begins at 11 a.m.
