April 24, 2009 | Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. ? The University of Colorado tennis team saw their conference post-season come to an end with 4-0 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Conference Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Colorado (12-10), seeded No. 5, was playing it's the third match in as many days, lost the doubles point, then subsequently lost the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 singles positions in straight sets.
Friday's match between CU and NU was the second meeting between the two schools in six days. The Cornhuskers defeated the Buffs, 5-2 last Sunday in Boulder.
“It was a tough one,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “It was a great fight by our girls in singles and doubles but, unfortunately, today it just wasn't quite good enough. Unfortunately, we weren't where we quite wanted to be today. Nebraska played well. All credit to them.”
The Cornhuskers improve to 16-6 and move on to the conference semifinals where they will take on three-time defending champion and top seed Baylor (22-4) Saturday afternoon.
CU nearly narrowed its deficit in singles play as senior Franziska Jendrian was on the verge of winning at No. 4 singles leading Wiveca Swarting 7-5, 4-3; freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen rallied from a set down at No. 5 forcing the decisive final set with Jennifer Holmberg, 4-6, 6-4, 0-0; and at No. 6, Ania Anuszkiewicz and Stephanie Evans were also headed to the final set with the score 6-2, 1-6, 0-0.
The 2009 spring season is not officially over for the Buffaloes as the 2009 NCAA Division I women's tennis selection announcements will air approximately 3:20 p.m. (MDT), Tuesday, April 28 on ESPNews.
