Soccer Suffers 1-0 OT Loss To Santa Clara

September 20, 2009 | Soccer

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped its second-straight decision, a 1-0 overtime loss, to No. 12 Santa Clara in the final day of the Stanford/NIKE Invitational here Sunday.

Colorado falls to 4-5-0 on the season, and is now 1-4 against top-25 teams, while Santa Clara improves to 7-2-0.

Freshman Amy Barczuk saw CU's first attempt in the match, 15 minutes into the first half.  Barczuk, who came up from the defensive third, fired a shot from 25-yards out towards the goal and the ball sailed just inches high of the crossbar.

Santa Clara, who dominated most of the possession early in the first half, created its best opportunity in the 19th minute when Anessa Patton broke through the Colorado defense and found herself one-on-one with senior goalkeeper Kara Linder.  Patton flicked a shot towards the goal, but Linder made a sharp and quick one-handed save to knock the ball wide and allow Colorado to clear it out of the box.

Freshman Shaye Marshall nearly scored for the Buffs with less than seven minutes to play in the half, giving CU an offense spark as they started to see more action in Santa Clara's box.  Marshall received a through ball in front of the goal and put the ball in the back of the net, but her goal was called back due to an offside's call.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half, with Santa Clara outshooting the Buffaloes 11 to two.

The Broncos continued to dominate offensively in the second half and nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute.  Allie Vernon one-touched a quick shot from the top of the box, but Linder was able to quickly react and fully extend her arm up to push the ball over the goal and out of play.

Colorado and Santa Clara would play to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.  The Broncos held CU to one shot in the second half, while they fired 10 towards CU's goal.

Santa Clara came out in the first overtime period with more of a spark and sense of urgency, getting its first shot off just 27 seconds in.  Jordan Angeli was wide open in front of the net and one-touched a shot towards Linder, who once again managed to knock it out play, keeping SCU out of the back of the net.

Linder would be tested two more times in a one-minute span, coming up with the saves on both attempts, however with less than two minutes to play in the first overtime period, Santa Clara would seal the deal and finally sneak past Linder for the win.

The Broncos were awarded back-to-back corner kicks and on the second attempt, Olivia Klei's cross would find the head of Kiki Bosio who flicked it in the back of the net for the 1-0 win over Colorado.

The Buffaloes were outshot by Santa Clara 27 to three, and CU was unable to get a single shot on goal.  Linder, however, was forced to make seven saves in the match, which proved to be a career high for the senior goalkeeper.

"It was a game well within our reach and one of those games that we could have won," said head coach Bill Hempen.  "But like every sport, if you turn the ball over, sooner or later you're going to have to pay the price.  We turned it over one too many times today and we didn't do anything to help take the pressure off our defense which made it difficult.  We played very well defensively, but our forwards are getting nothing. It's been four games now where our forwards haven't scored a goal and we need to fix that.

"We start conference play next week with Nebraska, which is a team that is going to be physical and we don't look like we're ready for that.  It's going to be important for us to win these next three games in a row at home and try to get back on track.

"Kara was brilliant again today, but unfortunately our early losses this year are hurting us now.  We just played three tough games in a row and our team certainly understands what it's like to compete at the highest level and be an elite program."

Colorado will return back to Boulder and kick off the remainder of the Big 12 Conference season, opening the weekend with Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m., followed by Iowa State on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.  As always, admission and parking are free at Prentup Field.

The first 500 fans to the match on Friday will receive a FREE hot dog and drink courtesy of the Boulder Buff Club.  On Sunday, the Colorado Student Athlete Committee will be collecting gently used and new coats that will be donated to Coloradans in need.  So gather up your old coats and bring them to Prentup to help Coloradans in need prepare for the winter ahead.
