Stewart, Linder Take Athlete Of The Week Honors

September 24, 2009 | Football, General, Soccer

BOULDER - Football tailback Rodney Stewart (sophomore) and soccer goalkeeper Kara Linder (senior) earned athlete of the week honors for the week of September 14-20.  This is Stewart's second career athlete of the week award; his first, coincidentally, coming on the same week last season.  For Linder, this is her first career honor.

Linder, a Lincoln, Nebraska (Lincoln East) native, despite a pair of losses over the weekend, played potentially two of the strongest games of her career. Her weekend highlight was her performance in Sunday's overtime loss to Santa Clara.  Linder racked up seven legitimate saves in the match, which proved to be a career high, including three alone in overtime play before SCU eventually broke through for the late overtime win.

Stewart, a Westerville, Ohio (Brookhaven) native, returned from a hamstring injury, rushing 32 times for 127 yards against a staunch Wyoming run defense, scoring a career-best two touchdowns and also picking up eight first downs.  He also caught a five yard pass while rushing for his fourth 100-yard game of his career in helping Colorado win its first game of the season, 24-0 over Wyoming.

Others nominated for this week's award were:  Rosie Steinhaus (volleyball), Emily Talley (women's golf), and Kevin Kring (men's golf)

Volleyball: Rosie Steinhaus, Sophomore, Flagstaff, Arizona
Steinhaus tied for team lead with 2.33 kills per set (14 total), and was ranked second on the team hitting .113.  She also tied for the team lead with 15 digs (2.50 dps), and lead the Buffs with 1.00 bps (six total, one solo and five assists).

Women's Golf: Emily Talley, Sophomore, Napa, California
Talley led the Buffaloes individually for the second-straight tournament in a single week, and just barely missed the top-20 at the New Mexico Invitational.  Talley tied for 22nd individually and carded CU's low round in round two, a 2-under 71.  Early last week at the CSU invitational, Talley recorded a career-low 69 (3-under), and a 218 total for the tournament to take 17th place, which marks the lowest individual finish by a Buffalo this season.

Men's Golf: Kevin Kring, Sophomore, Springfield, Missouri
Kring tied for 13th to lead all Buff golfers in the Air Force Falcon Invitational, as CU finished 9th in the 19-team field. He closed with a final round 77 for a 215 total; he was the tournament first round leader after he opened with a course- and school-record tying 8-under 64 on the 7,301-yard, par 72 Eisenhower Golf Club Blue Course.

The 64 tied the Eisenhower Blue course record and also tied the CU school record for the most strokes under par (-8) for a single round, matching Edward McGlasson's 63 on a par-71 track in 2005 and 64 on a par-72 layout a year later.  The 64 is tied for the second best gross score in school history, topped only by McGlasson, and also matched by McGlasson and John Nyuli, the first to shoot that low, doing so in 1989 at Wyoming's Red Jacoby Invitational (that was on a par-70 course).
