Iowa State-Colorado Quotes
January 16, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller
GENERAL - "I know that this is a disappointing loss for our players. We felt pretty confident coming in here as far as how we were playing and how we prepared for the game. But as hard as you work and as many shots as you hit, when a team has as many defensive rebounds as you have total, they are hard to beat. I thought we looked sharp at times and were executing well, and then other times we just struggled. We made some pretty good adjustments in the second half by driving the ball and getting the free throw line. Bottom line, [Alison] Lacey made some big shots. We guarded them and did what we needed to do, but with the shot clock winding down the ball was in Lacey's hands and she makes plays. She is one of the best guards in the conference and she showed tonight why."
ON ALISON LACEY - "It was no surprise to me. She has done it before. She hit some tough shots, and it is very frustrating because you think you have it guarded and when it becomes time to make plays she does."
Colorado Players
Chucky Jeffery, Fr., G/F
On comfort during the game - "I just came out and I played. I started getting to the hoop and shooting without second guessing myself. They just out rebounded us and that's basically what decided the game; there rebounding."
On tough rebounding night - "We didn't box out, simple as that. We keep trying to out-jump people and it's not working."
Brittany Spears, Jr., F
On close loss - "It's tough because we knew we could have won the game. We were just one step away. It's tough when you know you could have won the game but you didn't win."
On scoring battle with Alison Lacey - "It was fun, but it would be better if we would have gotten the win. It doesn't really matter because we didn't get the win."
On tough shooting night - "That was just me. It was one of those nights."
Bianca Smith, Sr., G
On disappointment of loss - "I think this one was pretty devastating. We all went into this game with a great scout and we were prepared. We came out and we didn't execute at times. We didn't box out and we had too many lapses and in the Big 12 you can't have lapses like that."
Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly
GENERAL-"I don't think either team would say that was the most aesthetic game either has ever played. I think both teams played really hard and we were fortunate to make a couple big shots at big times. We had enough stops without fouling, but we still fouled too much and kept putting them on the free throw line. Colorado is hard to guard, they are really hard to guard. "
ON ALISON LACEY-"Alison is one of those players that is very special. She is a player that makes big shots. The biggest thing was we had to keep her in the game. She had two fouls, we had an 8 point lead and we have a two foul rule. If you get two fouls in the first half you have to sit. We got down by seven so we put [Lacey] back in and she hit a big shot and tried to be smart about it because we wanted her for the second half. She was rested for the second half so she could play the whole half and she had her legs underneath her to make those big shots."
ON COLORADO PLAYERS JEFFERY AND SPEARS-"They had a hard time guarding us and we had a really hard time guarding both Jeffery and Spears. We tried to get up in them a little bit because we were so worried about the shot. They did a really smart thing and spread us out and attacked the basket. We are a team that historically doesn't foul a lot and we did tonight. We were out of our position a little bit; out of our stance. They do a really good job of dribbling and not stopping and then getting you to relax and then keep going. They get you in a little bit of hesitation. A lot of women players don't have that and every time I thought we were in a decent position there was one more step and it basically became a free throw shooting contest for them."

ON PLAYING IN COLORADO-"It was really good, I am glad we won.  It was really good to be home and playing on the CU court again.  I was a little bit nervous but not anymore than any other game.  I haven't thought of that-I have never lost on the Colorado court."
ALISON LACEY, Sr., G
ON SECOND HALF PLAY-"I had to sit out for a lot of the first half and I was dying to get back in.  1-2 sounds a lot better than 0-3 so that was always in the back of my mind. We have some inexperienced players so It is my job as a the senior point guard to take over. We shot 29% in the first half and any game when we shoot that low is going to be tough.  Then we shot 51% in the second half so I think second half we ran our plays a little bit better and were tougher with the ball.  We need to work on defense but the second half we really fought hard."
