Wallace & Hartigan Earn CU Athlete of the Week Accolades

October 12, 2010 | General

BOULDER- University of Colorado women's golfer Jessica Wallace and football defensive end Josh Hartigan were named CU's Athletes of the Week for October 4-10.

Wallace, a junior out of Langley, British Columbia, had two outstanding tournaments this past week. With a three day total of 213, Wallace finished 3-under par at the University of Missouri's Johnie Imes Invitational. Her score tied her for third place, just one stroke shy of the co-winners.

Wallace faced major obstacles that upcoming weekend en route to her huge come-from-behind victory in the 13th Annual CU/Heather Farr Memorial Invitational. The Pepperdine transfer was one of five Buffs involved in a multi-car accident after their two rounds of golf on Friday. She and junior Emily Talley were the only two who were able to play the next day, and the Buffs could not be luckier she did. Wallace bounced back from eighth place in fashion and led CU to a huge victory. She made par the last day, making her the individual champion by one stroke. CU also won the team title by 16 strokes.

In addition to becoming just the fourth Buffalo ever to win an event, Wallace has also earned three straight top five finishes, another a school record.

Colorado's defense showed promise and determination against Mizzou this past weekend behind junior Josh Hartigan. Hartigan made his presence felt early in the first quarter when he sacked Missouri's quarterback Blaine Gabbert for a loss of five yards. This tackle on a third down would force the Tigers to punt. He logged another tackle and third down stop later in the game.

Hartigan continued to be an impact player when the fourth quarter rolled around. He intercepted a pass from Missouri's James Franklin and returned it two yards to give the Buffs another possession. The interception was the first of Hartigan's collegiate career.

Also nominated this week were soccer's Kate Russell and volleyball's Kerra Schroeder.

Russell, a junior from Longmont, Colo., helped the Buffs' soccer team end a four-game scoreless streak and three-game losing streak. Russell sent a shot soaring over Iowa State's goalkeeper to put CU ahead 2-1 in the second half. She also dished out the game-tying assist to Shaye Marshall earlier in the game. Russell is now CU's second leading point scorer with eight points (2 goals, 4 assists).

Schroeder, the six-foot sophomore from San Diego, also put up some impressive stats for the CU women's volleyball team in the last week. In addition to recording two aces, she had 2.33 kills per set, 1.67 digs per set and .017 blocks per set.
