Stewart, Tremblay Earn CU Athlete of the Week Accolades

October 05, 2010 | Cross Country, Football, General

BOULDER- Football's Rodney Stewart (junior) and cross country's Laura Tremblay (sophomore) were both named CU Athlete of the Week for the week of September 27-October 3.

Stewart, a native of Westerville, Ohio (Brookhaven), rushed for 149 yards while scoring one touchdown this past Saturday in CU's 29-27 win over Georgia. The 5-foot-6 tailback rushed a total of 19 times and totaled three receptions for an additional 31 yards, as well as earning a total of eight first downs throughout the game. His 65-yard run in the third quarter of Saturday's game was the longest rush by a CU player since Hugh Charles' 74-yard touchdown run at Oklahoma State on Oct. 1, 2005. Stewart also converted on one 3rd-&-1 and one 4th-&-1, and is now 7-for-7 in such situations this season.

Saturday's game marked Stewart's 10th career 100-yard game. He is now tied for the seventh most in the school's history along with former players Hugh Charles, Merwin Hodel, and Cortlen Johnson. With 1,828 career yards, Stewart has crept close to CU's top-20; he is 22nd all-time, on the heels of Byron White (1,864) and Bob Stransky (1,868).

Tremblay, a native of Loveland, Colo. (Thompson Valley), out-sprinted teammate Emma Coburn this past Saturday to win the 25th Rocky Mountain Shootout individual women's 5.8k title. Tremblay's time of 20:29 ties for the 10th fastest in course history and second fastest ever on the course by a sophomore.

Tremblay's victory this past weekend marks the first of her collegiate career. The last sophomore to win the title was former CU athlete and Olympian Jenny Barringer in 2006.

Tremblay's outstanding effort this past weekend helped the women win their 12th straight team title at Saturday's meet.

Also nominated for this week's award: Michala Hedelund Jensen (women's tennis); Kerra Schroeder (volleyball); Luke Symons (men's golf); Joe Bosshard (cross country).

Women's Tennis: Michala Hedelund Jensen, Jr., Frederiksberg, Denmark.

Jensen won four straight matches - all in straight sets to win the Delta singles bracket at the Air Force Invitational where she competed against players from 10 other schools across the country. The Denmark native defeated opponents from Arizona, Wyoming, Iowa State, and toppled Oregon's Patricia Skowronski (6-1, 6-3) in the finals. Hedelund Jensen leads the Buffs with six victories in seven matches played this fall season.

Volleyball: Kerra Schroeder, So., San Diego, Calif.

Schroeder led the Buffs with 31 kills and hit .318 in a set of losses this past week. She averaged 3.88 kills per set, 2.38 digs per set and .50 blocks per set. Schroeder recorded 19 kills in the five-set loss to Texas A&M and also picked up nine digs and posted three blocks. Schroeder recorded a double-double against Missouri with 12 kills and 10 digs. She hit .344 against Missouri with just one error on 32 attacks.

Men's Golf: Luke Symons, Sr., Lone Tree, Colo.

Symons posted CU's top finish at the inaugural CU-Mark Simpson Invitational, tying for seventh with a 70-72-72-214 scorecard. Later in the week, he finished 54th at the New Mexico Tucker Invitational with a 71-81-79-231 scorecard. The CU-Simpson Invitational was Symons first collegiate competition since May 2009.

Cross Country: Joe Bosshard, So., Crested Butte, Colo.

Bosshard led a field of 280 runners at the 25th Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout in the men's 9 kilometer course, crossing the finish with a personal record and the sixth fastest time in course history at 24 minutes, 44 seconds. This is Bosshard's second collegiate victory in cross country. Bosshard, who was an All-American in the outdoor 10k this past June, had a huge lead on the field, beating teammate Andy Wacker by more than 20 seconds. The fourth-ranked Buffs recorded 18 points to win the Division I team title.
