Colorado-Texas State Quotes
December 01, 2010 | Women's Basketball
General-"It all started again with our defense again tonight. I thought we came out and did some really nice things in the first half, defensively especially, holding them to 12 points. That really spurred a lot of our offense. We couldn't really get our offense going, but we used our defense to get a lot of easy points, especially in that first half. In the second half, we hit a bit of a lull there, but still had some good spurts which is important. I thought our rebounding was good tonight. We held them to nine offensive rebounds which was our goal. I thought we took care of the ball a lot better in the first half; we were throwing it kind of everywhere in the second half. But first-half wise I thought we did a pretty nice job."
On team's defense in recent games-"It's been good, especially in spurts. I thought it was a little bit better on Saturday, but I thought we did some really nice things as far as being in help-side, forcing the ball where we wanted to force it, pressuring, getting our hands in passing lanes and rebounding out of it."
On defensive effort during offensive lulls-"Exactly, if we're not scoring, then they better not be scoring either. We're picking up our defense and making up for our lack of offense at any particular time. Same thing the other way around as well. It's about minimizing runs and trying to maximize our runs."
On maintaining intensity with lead-"It is. It's human nature when things are going right and you have a big lead. Sometimes it's hard to stay focused and keep the same intensity as you have at the beginning of the game when the score is tied and those sorts of things. At that point it becomes more about us and doing what we need to do and what we need to get better at. We're hopefully focusing on those things. I thought, especially this game, we had a tough time doing that. We'll take it, yes; it's a great problem to have actually."
On switching to zone defense-"We want to be able to change some defenses up this year, so we've been working on it a little bit in practice. We've seen some teams zone Texas State, and it was pretty effective, so we wanted to see what our zone would look like."
Colorado Players
Chucky Jeffery, So., G
On CU's defense the last two games- "She [Coach Lappe] never wants us to let up off of our defense, because defense is what sparks everything else on the floor. If we have good intensity on defense, then everything else comes after that. We put a lot of emphasis on bringing energy and defensive intensity to the floor. I think mostly in the second half we let off a little bit. It was still there, but there were times where we weren't quite as energetic but I definitely think it carried over from Saturday. When we're in practice that's what we work on, communication, being in denial, not taking off a play because that one play could be a game changer.
On her career performance tonight- "Everyone feels good. I don't necessarily just look at myself. As long as we get a win I'm happy for everybody else on the team. If I didn't have my teammates, I wouldn't have the stats that I have. I feel like it was a really good team win as well as Saturday. Everybody is contributing. I'm just going with the flow right now."
On taking a leadership role this year- "I feel like I'm the point guard and I feel like the younger players and even everybody else on the team listen to me when I talk, just like a verbal type leadership, maybe not even with just my stats, just my presence is kind of like the leadership role for our team."
Ashley Wilson, Fr., G
On having one of her best nights so far this season- "It feels good. I like playing with these guys. It's taken me a long time to come back from the injury, to bounce back from everything, to get into the flow of things. I think I am making a lot of progress. My teammates are helping me out, coach [Lappe] is helping me out. I'm doing a lot better."
On what happened on her layup when she went down- "My ankle was tweaked a little bit, but more so she [Ashley Ezeh] came across my head more than anything, but I'm alright."
Texas State Head Coach Suzanne Fox
GENERAL
"I was pleased with our effort, I thought we played hard, I just thought we didn't shoot the ball well. In the second half we lost by ten. I think our kids competed, I thought they battled for balls. Again when you don't shoot the ball well you're going to struggle to beat anybody, but I can't fault our effort. That was a big thing we were looking for, to really come out and play hard."
ON CU'S DEFENSE
"They're a tall team. They've got length. In the second half we got into the paint and got really good looks, we just didn't make them. I think they're a good team, it's just one of those games, it was real physical and neither team got to the line very much. I think for us we need to continue to do what we're supposed to do."
