Milewski and Medina Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- Tennis star Monica Milewski (senior) and track athlete Richard Medina (sophomore) were named as CU Athlete's of the week for the week of February 8-14. This is the first honor of the year for Milewski and the seventh of her career, while Medina has earned this award for the first time.
Milewski, a native of Park Ridge, Ill. (Main South), recorded four wins over the weekend, a pair on the singles court and another pair on the doubles court, helping the Colorado women's tennis team to a pair of 7-0 sweeps over Oregon and New Mexico. Milewski, the No. 90th nationally ranked player, became only the eighth women in school history to win 80 career singles matches blanking New Mexico's Ashley Bonner, 6-0, 6-0 and Oregon's Pavlina Smatova, 6-4, 6-1. The two wins give her a team-best 15 wins on the year. On the doubles court, Milewski teamed with Ania Anuszkiewicz for another pair of victories. She now has accumulated 151 career victories (80 singles and 71 doubles) moving her into third place on the school's combined victories list.
Medina, a Grand Junction, Colo. (Grand Junction) native, earned a provisional time in the men's 5,000-meter run at the Husky Classic on Saturday, Medina placed eighth in his heat with a PR of 14:04.24 and placed 20th overall. Medina's time ranks second in the Big 12 Conference and is the 20th best time recorded during the 2010 season. Medina finished just .12 seconds ahead of teammate Aldo Vega.
In his lone game of the week, Higgins scored a game-high 21 points, in addition to four steals and four rebounds in Colorado's 68-51 loss at Kansas State. The loss drops the Buffaloes to 11-13 overall and 2-8 in the Big 12 Conference. Higgins was also 6-of-6 from the free throw line in 38 minutes. The 21 points was his ninth 20-plus effort of the season and 22nd for his career.
Women's Golf: Christine Kim, Senior, Pahoa, Hawaii
Kim finished tied for 21st at the Northrop Grumann Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. In a field that featured five of
the top 10 and 11 of the top 20 ranked golfers in the nation, Kim shot an even-par 71 on the final day, the best round of any
golfer in the field. The Buffs finished 14th and Kim finished with a three-round total of 226, or 13 over par.
Women's Track: Laura Thweatt, Junior, Durango, Colo.
Thweatt finished 17th overall in the women's 5,000-meter run at the Husky Classic on Saturday with a time of 16:34.33. She was the runner-up in the second heat, finishing .49 seconds behind Rose Wetzel (Club Northwest). Thweatt's time was a 25.06 second improvement on her previous personal best of 16:59.39. Her time is the 25th best in the country and ranks second in the Big 12.
Women's Basketball: Brittany Spears, Junior, Pasadena, Calif.
Spears finished the week averaging 16 points, six rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as the Buffs went 0-2 for the week.
Spears' highlight game came in a 55-65 loss to Oklahoma. In that game she scored 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting, secured
nine rebounds and had three steals in 38 minutes of play.
