Buffs Fall To No. 1 Jayhawks
February 20, 2010 | Men's Basketball
Burks, sidelined with a knee injury, did not play in Colorado's first game against Kansas this season, a 72-66 overtime victory for the Jayhawks on Feb. 3. His presence in the lineup was not enough for the Buffaloes to pull off the upset on the road.
"I thought Kansas had a real bounce to their step. To be honest with you, I think that we have their attention," said CU Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik following the game. "Last year was a very competitive game here where we had a chance to win down the stretch and then we had a chance to win at our place as we all know. They came out with a lot of energy and really hit us hard and we were reeling after that."
Kansas went on a 29-9 run from the 16:51 to the 6:21 marks of the first half to open up a 37-16 lead. Cole Aldrich scored nine points for the Jayhawks in this stretch. The Buffs, behind eight points from Kansas-native Casey Crawford after KU's run, tightened the margin to 48-34 at the break. Kansas freshman Xavier Henry led all players with 12 points and six rebounds at halftime, making 3-of-5 three-pointers.
A pair of Cory Higgins free throws brought the score to 55-43 with 15:57 remaining, but that was as close as Colorado would get in the second half. Kansas continued to expand the lead and a three-pointer by Sherron Collins with 4:29 left in the game gave the Jayhawks their largest lead at 90-63.
For the 11th time this season, Burks led the Buffs in both scoring and rebounding in the same game as he pulled down seven boards. Burks also passed Donnie Boyce to move into third place on the Colorado freshman scoring list with 421 points on the season.
Marcus Relphorde had 16 points and Higgins added 13. Nate Tomlinson led the Buffaloes with four assists. Colorado committed 19 turnovers and was outrebounded 40-25.
Henry finished with a game-high 24 points for the Jayhawks. Aldrich recorded a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds in addition to blocking five CU shot attempts. Tyshawn Taylor, Sherron Collins, and Markieff Morris also scored in double figures with 17, 13, and 11 points, respectively.
The Buffs return to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Missouri to take on the Tigers. The game will tip at 5:30 p.m. MST.
