Gelso and Hartman Race to CU Athlete of the Week Honors

March 16, 2010 | General, Skiing

BOULDER- Skiers Matt Gelso (senior) and Katie Hartman (junior) earned the honor of CU Athlete's of the Week for the week of March 8-14. This is the seventh time Gelso has earned this award during his career and the third of this season; while Hartman has earned it for the second time during her career, both of those coming this season.

Gelso, a native of Truckee, Calif. (Truckee), helped CU to a third straight second place finish in the NCAA Championships, as he was CU's lone individual champion this year, claiming the 10-kilomoter classic race in convincing fashion. He then finished third in the 20-kilometer freestyle race, giving him two podium finishes; that gave him 22 for his career, tying him for fourth all-time in CU history. He earned first-team All-America honors for each race.

Hartman, a Breckenridge, Colo. (Summit) native, finished third in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom to help CU to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Championships. She posted CU's best result on what was a tough first day for the Buffaloes, and in the slalom, run at night, was 17th after the first but set the tone early in the second run, blazing down Howelsen Hill with what proved to be the second fastest second run (41.44), inspiring her teammates and leading to a 5-6-7 finish, just the third time ever CU placed three women in the top seven of the slalom. She earned first-team All-America honors in the giant slalom and second-team accolades for the slalom.

Others nominated for this week's award were: Justin Bardgett (men's golf), Alec Burks (men's basketball), Emily Talley (women's golf) and Michala Hedelund Jensen (women's tennis).

Men's Golf: Justin Bardgett, Senior, St. Louis, Mo.
Bardgett led the Buffaloes in the Louisiana Classics, tying for 21st with a 4-over par 70-73-77-220 scorecard on the 7,141-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course layout. He played the par-4 holes at 1-over for the week, tied for 10th best. CU finished 13th in the 15-team field.

Men's Basketball: Alec Burks, Freshman, Grandview, Mo.
Burks scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season in Colorado's 82-67 loss to Texas Tech in the first round of the Big 12 Championships at Kansas City. Burks recorded his eighth 20-plus effort on 8-for-14 shooting from the field with a pair of three-pointers and two steals. He tied his season-best of 10 rebounds. Burks scored 11 points with six rebounds in the first half.

Women's Golf: Emily Talley, Sophomore, Napa, Calif.
Talley led the Buffaloes at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, tying for 11th with an 8-over par 226 at the 6,223-yard, par-72 Almaden Country Club golf course. Talley shot 1-under par in the final round, one of just two subpar rounds on the day and one of just six in the tournament. She vaulted herself from 33rd to a tie for 11th and one shot from a tie for seventh with her final round. CU finished 11th in the 16-team field.

Women's Tennis: Michala Hedelund Jensen, Sophomore, Frederiksberg, Denmark
Hedelund Jensen went 1-1 in her respective singles tennis matches in Colorado's 0-2 week with losses at Nebraska and Iowa State. The Frederiksberg, Denmark native was the lone CU player to play three sets against her Nebraska opponent winning the opening set, 7-6(5), however dropped her last two, 6-0, 1-0(5). Hedelund Jensen rebounded two days later at Iowa State, edging Tessa Lang, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 3 slot. Hedelund Jensen has won four of her last six matches and secured her 11th win of the year.
