Golfers Sixth In Duck Invitational
March 22, 2010 | Men's Golf
JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - The University of Colorado men-s golf team opened strong but had some afternoon struggles as the Buffaloes stand in sixth place of the Oregon Duck Invitational, the first two rounds of which were completed here Monday.
No. 3 and host Oregon leads with a team score of 715, or 5-under par, which was good for a two-stroke edge over No. 33 Arkansas. No. 21 Oregon State (726), Pacific (730) and No. 63 Washington State (732) round out the top five.
Colorado, ranked No. 91, is in sixth with a 733 score, which is 13 strokes over par. The Buffs were in third after the first round, four strokes back of Arkansas and three behind Oregon after recording a 2-over 352 score. Only CU and UO had all five of their scorers in the top 32 after the morning 18, which saw just five players shoot in the 60s (with a low of 68), 17 shoot under par with another six matching it in the 84-man field.
Just two players cracked 70 in the afternoon, with 31 shooting par (11) or better (20) the second time around the challenging 7,020-yard, par-72 Shadow Hills Country Club course layout. Unfortunately for the Buffs, only one player was among that group and CU had to count several higher scores than in the morning.
Four Buffaloes are tied for 27th with 3-over par 147 scores, senior Justin Bardgett (71-76), freshman Derek Fribbs (71-76), and sophomores Sebastian Heisele (76-71) and Kevin Kring (73-74). Fribbs had the best nine of any Buff in the first round (2-under 34 on the front), while Kring closed with a 33 (3-under) on his final nine in the afternoon.
Redshirt frosh Jason Burstyn recorded a pair of 74s, with his 4-over 148 total tying him for 37th, while junior Michael Imperato logged a 73-78-151 into the books to stand tied for 55th.
"We had a very solid round in the morning, and we did play fairly solid most of the day," head coach Roy Edwards said. "No one posted any major numbers, just a couple of double bogeys here and there that-s going to happen on this kind of course. We just had two high overall numbers in the afternoon that we had to count.
"Justin got off to a bad start in the afternoon, but worked hard so the round didn't fully get away from him, and Kevin played 3-under par his last nine holes to come back to a 74," Edwards added. "Those are two examples of why I believe we did a good job managing our game, something we-re starting to show marked improvement in. Justin and Derek had good opening rounds at 1-under each, Jason was consistent all day with a pair of 74s, and Sebastian came back strong his second time around."
There was a four-way tie for the individual lead through 36 holes, all at 4-under 140. Thirty-six players, including four Buffaloes, are within seven shots of the top spot with 18 holes remaining.
The final round will start at 9 a.m. mountain time on Tuesday; Colorado is paired with Washington State and will go off on Nos. 6-8. The Buffs will then head south to the San Diego area for the Barona Collegiate Cup this Thursday and Friday.
