March 26, 2010 | Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. - In a battle of winless teams with identical 0-2 records in Big 12 Conference play, the No. 61 Oklahoma State Cowgirls rallied to win five of six singles points to defeat the University of Colorado, 5-2, Friday afternoon.
OSU breaks a two-match losing streak and improves to 7-4 (1-2 Big 12), while the Buffaloes dropped their fourth straight, falling to 7-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The four-match losing streak matches the 2005 spring campaign when CU lost five in a row. The winless conference start after three matches is a school-first since 1990.
The Buffaloes took an early 1-0 advantage securing the doubles point for the fourth time this season.
Reaching the winners circle in doubles play was the No. 1 team of senior Monica Milewski and sophomore Ania Anuszkiewicz, who defeated Sasha Belova/Nataliya Shatkovskaya, 8-5; freshman Erin Sanders and senior Melisa Esposito defeated Sarah Meghoufel/Malika Rose, 8-5; and at No. 3, junior Abbie Probert and sophomore Michala Hedelund Jensen edged Alisa Buslaieva/Alexandra Cristello, 8-7(4).
Milewski's victory was her 75th career win moving one match closer to the school record held by May 2009 graduate Franziska Jendrian (76 wins). Milewski/Anuszkiewicz also improved to 9-3 in spring play and the pair have won seven straight.
Sanders/Esposito won for the first time together and at No. 3, Probert and Hedelund Jensen won their fourth straight as a pair and are 5-2. Esposito's doubles win was her 73rd for her career.
In singles, Milewski was the only CU student-athlete that claimed a point defeating Alisa Buslaieva, 7-6(5), 6-1. Milewski also picked up her first Big 12 win of the season and claimed her 20th conference career tally. The triumph for Milewski was also her 83rd career (seventh in school history).
CU also received strong singles play from Probert and Sanders with both falling in three sets.
"We came out and played very well in doubles," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "Oklahoma State played a little better than us in singles, however, we made a fight of it. Our competitive level is where we need it to be."
The Buffs will attempt to avoid a school-first 0-4 conference start when they continue its tour of the state of Oklahoma taking on the No. 34 ranked Sooners on Sunday, March 28.
