CU Men's Golf: Bardgett Completes College Career

May 22, 2010 | Men's Golf

SANTEE, Calif. ? University of Colorado senior Justin Bardgett completed his collegiate career here Saturday with a third straight 4-over par 76 in the third and final round of the NCAA Southwest Men's Golf Regional.

His 228 total for 54 holes (12-over par) tied him for 49th in the final standings.

Bardgett was one of 10 players in the 75-man field playing as individual without their teams, and for him to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals next month, he needed to be the top individual finisher not affiliated with the five teams which also advanced.  CSU-Northridge junior Nick Delio was also one of those 10 without a team, and he emerged as the overall medalist with a 3-under 213 score to move on to the finals; he carded a 1-over 73 in the final round.

Bardgett had the seventh most pars -- 36 -- over three days on the 7,360-yard, par-72 Carlton Oaks Golf Club layout, with four birdies, 12 bogeys and two double bogeys.  On Saturday, he started on the back nine and was 3-over after five holes before settling down to play just 1-over the rest of the way.

“It was pretty frustrating, I'm not going to lie,” Bardgett said. “Same story, different day, except I didn't make as many putts ... just couldn't get much going, making too many mistakes that kept me from gaining any real momentum, basically hacking it around.  That may sound worse than it really was, but it was disappointing to end my college career like that.

“This week aside, when looking back the entire experience at CU was a lot fun and I have a lot of great memories.”  He finished his senior year as CU's stroke average leader with a 73.14 figure.

He might have been a little too hard on himself as the course certainly had something to do with it; only two players shot in the 60s in each round, a stat Bardgett led the Big 12 Conference in during the regular season with nine sub-70 efforts.  His scorecard was practically right on average for the event, with the average score each day being 76, 75 and 76 again.

Bardgett will turn pro immediately and will play this weekend in his first professional tournament in Riverton, Wyo., where he'll be joined by a couple of former Buffs, Patrick Grady and Michael Baird.

“Overall, it was juts a ho-hum tournament overall for Justin,” head coach Roy Edwards said.  “Overall his game was pretty decent, but he just never got anything going that could build some momentum.  He appreciated the opportunity to play here this week and it was a nice way to cap off the year, as well as his career, for him.

“We're proud of Justin and what he accomplished in his career, from earning his degree to how he improved all along the way,” Edwards added.  “He was a Mark Simpson recruit (late CU coach), and he was a joy to be around the four years I spent with him.  We're sad to see him go but we're excited for the opportunities that lie ahead for him.  He was a great leader for us, and the young guys who are coming back will vouch that he had an impact on their career.”

No. 1-ranked Oregon pulled away from the field and won the team title with a 6-over 870 score, with No. 13 Augusta State snaring second with an 880 total.  There was a three way tie for third at 886 among No. 12 UNLV, No. 24 Tennessee and No. 34 California; Central Florida was sixth, seven shots out of the last team qualifying spot.
