Colorado-California Notes
September 11, 2010 | Football
QUICKLY California now leads the series 3-2, including a 2-0 edge in Berkeley ... CU is now 38-35-1 all-time against its future Pac-10 member teams ... The lead has never changed hands in the five games in he series, as the losing team has never led ... Cal led for 52:22 today, meaning the winning team has now led 235:46 out of a possible 300 minutes (tied the other 64:14) ... Colorado held the ball for 20:11 of a 22:52 stretch between the second and third quarters (10:29 2Q/2:37 3Q) but dueled to just a 7-7 tie in that window ... CU held a 179-168 edge in total offense after three quarters despite trailing 31-7; the Bears had 188 of their total in the final stanza (21 plays, 14 rushes) ... Colorado did convert on all five of its 3rd-and-1 plays (6-of-6 for the year) ... California was 4-of-11 on third down and 0-of-2 on fourth; opponent season totals in both are now 5-of-23 (21.7%) and 0-of-4 ... The Buffs extended their streak to 22 games with at least one quarterback sack ... There were no NFL scouts in attendance today-but next week at Folsom, a record 14 from 13 teams are planning to attend ... Obscure StatoftheDay: Colorado was called for nine penalties, two on the defense; in Dan Hawkins' four-plus years as head coach, only 90 have been whistled on the defense in 51 games (just two this year) ... CU's next opponent, Hawai'i, defeated Army at West Point today, 31-28.
FIRST CAREER STARTS Three players made their first career starts for the Buffaloes: WR Travon Patterson, S Travis Sandersfeld and TE Luke Walters.
ARTIFICIAL TURF Colorado is now 92-41-3 on non-grass fields dating back to 1989; CU has lost nine straight on the fake stuff (0-5 last year), it's last win on plastic being at Texas Tech (31‐26) in 2007.
WR SCOTTY McKNIGHT (2-14, 0 TD) He added to his CU career reception mark (173 total), and is now eight yards shy of 2,000 yards, ending the game with 1,992 for his career (seventh; Javon Green is sixth: 2,031).
-He caught a pass for his 39th straight game (every one in his career, including one bowl); that is an NCAA active‐best.
TB RODNEY STEWART (29-80, 0 TD) Note: includes 2 yards he should be awarded, 1 at the end of each half; he now has 1,573 yards, 25th on CU's all-time list as he passed Billy Waddy (1,537) and Ward Walsh (1,565) today and is just 2 behind Terry Kunz. The 29 attempts were the second most of his career.
TE RYAN DEEHAN (4-51, 0 TD) CU's John Mackey Award candidate had career highs for receptions and yards.
FLASHBACK A year prior to joining the Big 7 in 1948, CU split against two of its future brethren (7-0 win at Iowa State, 21-0 loss to Missouri at home); in 1995, before the Big 8 expanded into the Big 12, CU defeated Texas A&M 29-21 in Boulder ... Cal's 52-7 win is now on that welcome list if CU joins the Pac-10 for 2011, and if its entry is in 2012, the Buffaloes host Cal next Sept. 10 in Boulder to avenge today's defeat.
COLORADO INJURIES S Travis Sandersfeld (ankle sprain), UB Matt Bahr (knee sprain), QB Tyler Hansen (knee contusion); all will be revaluated Sunday.
