Golfers Finish Ninth At AFA-Miranda Invitational
September 20, 2010 | Men's Golf
COLORADO SPRINGS ? The University of Colorado men's golf team finished ninth here Monday in the Air Force Falcon-Gene Miranda Invitational, its first tournament of the 2010-11 season.
CU-Colorado Springs, a Division II competitor, got the best of several counterparts one division higher in winning with a 3-under par 861 total. That bested the University of San Diego by eight shots, with Colorado State and New Mexico State tying for third at 871. The Buffaloes turned in an 886 total (22-over par) to take ninth, four shots back of host Air Force.
The Buffs had hoped to move up into at least a top five finish after entering the final round in eighth place, but typically tough final round pin placements that made the course more difficult made it harder to post low scores. Just nine players broke par, one in the 60's, and seven others matched it in the final round on the 7,363-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Golf Club Blue Course. One those under par was CU sophomore Pat Wilson, who recorded the best 18-hole effort in the tournament by a Buff with a 2-under 70.
“It (the course) was more difficult, but we didn't help ourselves and didn't play well,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “There are always birdies out there to be had. Pat, playing as an individual instead of as one of our designated scorers, had a good round with his 2-under effort. So there were positive moments.
“But overall, just not a lot of good coming out of our first event, and we expected better just being a short derive from home, so we're disappointed with that,” Edwards added. “We've got to get after it and get ready for next week, we're going to see some of these same teams again in preparing for our own meet. They understand they don't want to play like that anymore and have to keep working at it.”
We didn't get off to as good a start as we wanted to for the year, just kind of a sluggish day overall,”. “We improved some in the afternoon, but we know we're capable of much better. The guys are fired up to get back out there (Monday), to get it under par and shoot a good score to see how far we could run up the board and get some momentum back.”
Sophomore Derek Fribbs led the Buffaloes, as he finished 25th after posting a final round 75 for a 5-over 221 total. Senior Luke Symons (also a final round 75) and Wilson tied for 29th with 222 scores.
junior Sebastian Heisele (75-72) are tied for 27th with 3-over 147 total; it's Symons first college tournament competition since the NCAA West Regional in May 2009, some 16 months ago, as he and undergone a pair of hip surgeries.
Colorado State's Ryan Peterson earned medalist honors, carding a final round 70 for a 9-under 216 total as he walked away with a five-stroke victory.
Next up for the Buffaloes is their own inaugural Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational, set for next Monday and Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.
