CU Golfers Finish 13th At Alister Mackenzie Invite
October 18, 2011 | Men's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team was hoping to end its fall season on a much better note but instead fell five spots in the standings for a 13th place finish in the ninth annual Alister Mackenzie Invitational, which was completed here Tuesday.
No. 2-ranked Oregon and No. 19 and host California wound up tying for the team title with 811 scores, or 41-under par.? The Bears shot the best final round score (13-under) to close a two-shot gap the Ducks opened the day with.? San Diego State was a distant third with an 819 score.
Colorado, ranked No. 36 (GolfStat), No. 32 (Golfweek) and No. 24 (GCAA/Nike), was fifth after the first round and eighth through 36 holes.? However, the Buffaloes recorded the second highest score in the final loop around the 6,718-yard, par-71 Meadow Club course track, with the 12-over score of 296 giving CU an 856 total, or 4-over for the meet.
The Buffs never caught fire like almost every other team in the field did on Tuesday, collectively scoring an eagle, 11 birdies and 53 pars against 19 bogeys and six doubles.? While no one “blew up” as the high score was a 77, no one shot par or better, with only Utah suffering through a similar final round.
Senior Kevin Kring recorded CU's top performance here over the three rounds, closing with a 1-over 72 for a 2-over 215 total, tying him for 44th.? He had a birdie, 15 pars and two bogeys to close his fall.
Senior Sebastian Heisele followed with a 74 in the final round for a 3-over 216 score, tying him for 48th.? He was 1-under through 13, but went on a bit of a rollercoaster ride in closing with bogey-double-birdie-double-par.
Junior Jason Burstyn and freshman David Oraee tied for 52nd in the field with 4-over 217 totals; Oraee finished up with a 74 and Burstyn a 77.? Oraee recorded his second eagle of the week Tuesday, also scoring a birdie and 11 pars against four bogeys and a double, while Burstyn had three birdies, eight pars, five bogeys and two doubles.
Junior Beau Schoolcraft rounded out the CU contingent, closing with a 76 for an 8-over 221; he tied for 68th after his day saw him score three more birdies, all in his final four holes to close strong, for a team-best 13 here.? He had eight pars, six bogeys and a double.
“For a really good team, this was as about as bad as we could have played,” head coach Roy Edwards said.? “We had higher expectations for today and for this tournament.? The good part of this is that this kind of round will definitely drive us during the off season.? As for today, it was not a lot of fun out there.? When things aren't going our way, we really have to be better at course management, and we weren't today.”
Oregon's Eugene Wong, who led by four strokes entering the final round, cruised to medalist honors, closing with a 4-under 67 for an 18-under 195 score, good for a five-stroke win over ?California's Max Homa.
The Buffaloes will resume their 2011-12 season schedule with the spring portion that begins February 1-3 at the Hawai'i-Hilo Intercollegiate on the Big Island.
