Cougars Edge Buffs

October 08, 2011 | Volleyball

PULLMAN, Wash. - Despite recording two more kills and one more dig than Washington State, the University of Colorado volleyball team lost another very tough and close match 25-23, 25-23, 25-12 on Saturday night at Bohler Gym.

The Buffs had 36 kills in the match compared to WSU's 34. CU also had 42 digs while the Cougars totaled 41. Kerra Schroeder recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs to lead the Buffs in both categories. Emily Alexis had 10 kills for CU and Nikki Lindow added another seven kills.

In the back row Elysse Richardson and Alyssa Valentine each picked up seven digs and Megan Beckwith added another six. The Cougars out-blocked CU, posting 15.0 blocks while the Buffs had 4.0 in the match.

Washington State was led by Meagan Ganzer's 19 kills. Ganzer also hit .375 with just four errors on 40 attacks.

The first set was very close and had 14 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team had more than a three point advantage at any point in the game. WSU took a 20-18 lead and CU came back with three straight points to take a 21-20 lead. At that point the Cougars took three before the Buffs answered back with two points to tie the set at 23-23. Unfortunately WSU took the next two points to win the set 25-23.

CU took a 7-5 lead in the second set before WSU came back with a 4-0 run to go up 9-7. The two teams battled and Colorado went back up 16-12. WSU took the following three points and CU came back with four straight to increase its lead to 20-15. The Cougars put together a 6-2 run to get within a point of the Buffs at 22-21, forcing CU to use a timeout. After the timeout WSU used a 4-1 run to finish the set 25-23.

The Cougars got out to a 7-1 before the Buffs strung together a 4-0 run to get within two points at 7-5. WSU pulled away from CU with a 6-1 run, bringing its lead to 13-6. The deficit would be too much for the Buffs to come back from as the Cougars took the set 25-12.

With the loss Colorado fell to 5-12 overall, 0-9 in the Pac-12, and WSU improved to 11-7, 3-5 in the Pac-12.

The Buffs return home next week to host Arizona on Oct. 14 and Arizona State on Oct. 15. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center.
