Buffs Fall Again On The Road
October 09, 2011 | Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. - Despite Colorado's effort, it wasn't enough to stop Washington State's leading point scorers, and the Buffs fell to the Cougars 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Pullman.   The Buffs dropped to 3-8-2 this season (0-4-1 Pac-12) and remain winless against a Pac-12 opponent.
After some tough pressure early on, the Cougars earned a corner kick just five minutes in. While Ali Fenter's header attempt went wide of the goal, it set an early precedent of what was to come in the game.
Washington State outshot Colorado 5-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game and forced keeper Annie Brunner to make two saves.
"Early on they had way more energy than us," CU head coach Bill Hempen said.
In the 16th minute of play, WSU was able to string a few passes together before finding Brandi Vega open at the top of the box. Brunner was able to get a piece of Vega's shot, but the ball had enough power to hit the back of the net and give WSU a 1-0 lead. It was Vega's fifth goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, Jocelyn Jeffers gave WSU a 2-0 lead after she was on the receiving end of a throw in and took a shot from 20 yards out to the far post.
"[WSU's forwards are] good and they're big and they're good on the ball. They know how to protect the ball," Hempen said.
The Buffs finally got their first shot in the 30th minute when Quinn Krier sent the ball high over the cross bar. WSU outshot Colorado 7-3 and went into halftime with a solid lead.
"[After the two goals] I think we settled down a bit and it rose our level [of play]," said Hempen. "I really thought we'd get one back before the half."
Colorado opened the second half with a few personnel changes. Hempen said he and the coaching staff changed some things to challenge the players to meet Washington State's energy level.
Colorado responded and got off three shots off before Jeffers countered and scored her second goal of the game giving her team a 3-0 lead. After receiving a long through ball from teammate Rachael Doyle, Jeffers dribbled around Brunner and tapped the ball in.
"The first five to 10 minutes of the second half we were fine. We were doing well until they scored the third goal," added Hempen.
The Cougars added one more insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Doyle-again-played a perfect through-ball to teammate Tiara Pittman who was able to beat two Buff defenders and Brunner in the box.
Hempen replaced Brunner with Kayla Millar after the goal, but the Buffs could not manage to get their offense going. WSU outshot Colorado 21-10, and the game ended in a disappointing 4-0 loss for the Buffs.
Colorado will return home to take on the University of Oregon on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Prentup Field.
