Clemons, Schroeder Named CU Athlete Of The Week

November 09, 2011 | Football, General, Volleyball

BOULDER -- Football's Toney Clemons (senior) and volleyball's Kerra Schroeder (junior) are awarded CU Athlete of the Week for their outstanding athletic accomplishments the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6.

Clemons, originally from New Kensington, Pa. (Valley), had five catches for a career-high 112 yards and two touchdowns in Friday night's 42-17 loss to No. 18 USC. His 37-yard reception for a touchdown put CU up 7-0 early, the Buffs' first lead in five games. A 6-foot-2 wide receiver, Clemons transferred to Colorado in 2009 from the University of Michigan. This was the first two touchdown game of Clemons' career.

Schroeder, a 6-foot-tall outside hitter, recorded 31 kills and 16 digs as the Buffs took a set from both No. 3 Stanford and No. 7 Cal over the weekend. Despite the team losing 3-1 in each match, Schroeder recorded 15 kills against Stanford on Thursday night and was only one dig shy of a double-double with nine digs. The San Diego, Calif. (Torrey Pines) native had 16 kills and seven digs against Cal on Sunday. Schroeder averaged 3.88 kills, 2.00 digs and 4.28 points per set in the two matches.

Also nominated for this week's award: Kristina Schleich (tennis) and Maggi Steury (soccer).

Tennis: Kristina Schleich, So., Lilienthal, Germany

Schleich won both of her singles matches in straight sets at the University of California-Irvine Fall Invitational. The sophomore defeated Taylor Raney of Cal-State Riverside, 6-2, 6-2, and then defeated Montana's Sasha Carter, 6-3, 7-5. The pair of wins improves Schleich's singles record to a team-best eight wins during the fall season. Originally scheduled for three days, the invitational was cut short due to inclement weather.

Soccer: Maggi Steury, Sr., Carmel, Ind.

Steury scored the lone goal in Colorado's 2-1 loss to Utah on Friday. In the senior defender's final game with the Buffs, her goal on Friday was the first of her collegiate career. Over the 2011 season, Steury has seen action in 14 games and contributed 16 shots.
