Golfers In 13th In Battle At The Beach
February 13, 2011 | Men's Golf
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team got off to a slow start here Sunday, as the Buffs find themselves in 13th, or last, place after the first round of the second annual Battle at the Beach.
No. 25 San Diego leads the field, coming in with a 2-under 348 score in the unique format where five players score for the team instead of the usual four. No. 14 Augusta State is second with an even-par 350, while No. 27 Washington and No. 34 Arizona State are tied for third at 1-over 351.
The Buffaloes shot 23-over par, or 373, in the first round, but are only 11 shots out of ninth in a field that features nine top 50 teams, six in the top 27. It's the second straight tournament loaded with highly ranked teams that the Buffaloes are competing in.
Sophomore Jason Burstyn posted CU's best score Sunday, as his 1-under par 69 on the 6,900-yard, par-70 Ocean North Course at Pelican Hill Golf Club course was his collegiate low. After opening with three pars and then shooting a bogey on No. 4, he got back to even with a birdie on No. 6 and played the rest of his round at either 1-under or even, closing his round with a birdie on No. 18 to record his 69, tying him for 11th in the standings. His 13 pars on the day tied for the eighth most in the 82-man field.
Junior Kevin Kring had CU's next best score, a 5-over 75, though his 12 pars tied him for the 15th most. CU's stroke average leader (73.0) mustered just one birdie Sunday, with four bogeys and just his sixth double bogey in 16 rounds this season. He remains tied for the national lead in fewest holes with triple bogey or worse (zero in 288 holes out of 6,600 golfers nationally).
Senior Luke Symons and sophomore Pat Wilson both posted 6-over 76 efforts; each had three birdies and a double bogey in their rounds, while Wilson had nine pars and five bogeys and Symons seven of each.
Sophomore Derek Fribbs finished his day with a 7-over 77, as he recorded 11 pars and seven bogeys, and fellow soph Johnny Widmer rounded out the CU contingent here with a 13-over 83; the bulk of his extra strokes came on just holes, as quadruple and quintuple bogeys accounted for nine shots of the overage. He still had 11 pars and a birdie.
"Overall it was a tough day for us as we just made too many big numbers," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "It makes the game very difficult against this strong of a competitive field. I am very proud of Jason, who posted his career lowest score. He has been working very hard on his game and is always learning about his strengths and weaknesses. He continues to make steady improvement.
"As we move forward, we need to keep being smart on our course management and I know we will have strong second and third rounds," Edwards added. "We need to keep competing hard for every single shot. We are not doing that as well as we are capable of."
The second round is set for an 8 a.m. start on Monday, with the final round scheduled for Tuesday.
