Oklahoma-Colorado Notes
February 24, 2011 | Women's Basketball
• Quickly... Colorado is now 2-2 against ranked teams in 2010-11, the first time since the 2007-08 season the Buffaloes have posted multiple wins against ranked teams (the other was a 66-60 overtime win over #17 Iowa State in Boulder on Jan. 15) ... Oklahoma dropped to 17-3 against unranked foes, all on the road (at Arkansas, at TCU, at Colorado) ... There are 35 first-year coaches in Division I this year, all of whom have combined for five wins against ranked teams; CU head coach Linda Lappe owns two of those ... Colorado took the lead for good at 34-31 on a Britney Blythe three-pointer at the 2:18 mark of the first half; CU thus led the final 22:18 of the game, with OU pulling to within one point just once (at 58-57) ... Colorado is now 12-0 when leading at halftime this season (also led at halftime in its other win over a ranked team (29-22 vs. ISU) ... The Buffs had averaged just 46.7 points in their last three games, but came out tonight and matched their first half conference-high with 39 points (also doing so versus Nebraska) ... CU's 73 points are a season high in conference play (previous high came in a 70-45 win over Nebraska in Boulder) ... Meagan Malcolm-Peck's first half block put her in sole possession of 16th on CU's career list (49) and her 3-pointer tied her for 16th (51) ... CU has been called for 35 fouls in its last three first halves (9 at KSU, 12 at ISU, 14 tonight); in the second halves, they have been whistled for 5, 13 and 6, respectively, meaning a total of 59 fouls in the last three games.
• Series Update. In likely Oklahoma's last visit to Boulder for the foreseeable future, and unless the two meet in the Big 12 tournament, the series currently has CU ahead, 34-22, including a 17-6 edge in Boulder; OU had won the last eight (the last three in Boulder) prior to tonight, which also had been the longest CU losing streak to any conference team. CU's last win over the Sooners had been on March 12, 2003 by the exact same score, 73-68; in that game, current Buff head coach Linda Lappe was a senior and she scored 13 points and dished out six assists. CU's last win over OU in Boulder was earlier that year (Feb. 15), and Lappe made four free throws (10-of-10 in the game) in the final 16 seconds to secure a 61-57 win. It was the first win over a ranked OU team since a 69-64 decision in Norman on Feb. 3, 1995 (CU was ranked No. 4, OU No. 25). It is the first unranked CU team to beat an OU ranked team since a 94-80 win on Jan. 27, 1987, OU was ranked No. 23 in the coaches poll.
• We Don't Need No Stinkin' Twos. Colorado did not make its first two point basket until there was 6:56 remaining in the first half on a driving layup by Brittany Spears; 12 of CU's first 16 shots were 3-point attempts. The eight three-pointers in the first half was a CU season high at halftime (7 vs. Regis and Nebraska); the 11 for the game was also a season-high (besting the 10 vs. Regis and Nebraska) and the most since making 14 in an 80-79 overtime win at Missouri last season. On the other side of the coin, Oklahoma didn't make its first three until the 19:18 mark of the second half; the Sooners were 0-of-4 in the first half and came into the game averaging 7.7 makes and 21.1 attempts from behind the arc (finished 4-of-12).
• End Of Half Flurry. Oklahoma's big first half lead was seven on two occasions (13-6, 21-14) and the Sooners were ahead 31-26 with five minutes remaining before the Buffaloes closed out the half on a 13-2 run, holding OU to just 1-of-10 from the floor.
• Brittany Spears (24 points/6 rebounds/4 steals). She recorded her 103rd career game in double-digits (her 40th 20-plus point game), moving in sole possession of second place on CU's all-time list. She passed former teammate Jackie McFarland who had 102 from 2004-08. Lisa Van Goor (1980-85) holds the school mark at 108. Spears has now scored in double digits in 24-of-26 games this season. With 1,985 career points, she is now in 11th place on the Big 12's all-time scoring list, passing Takia Starks (Texas A&M, 1,977 points from 2006-09) tonight. Spears 24 points were her third most this season (she had 26 against both Missouri and Nebraska in Boulder), and gave her 92 points in four career games versus OU (23.0 per). Her four steals were her second most this year; she had five versus Iowa State, thus giving her nine in the two CU wins over ranked teams.
• Chucky Jeffery (12 points/10 rebounds/8 assists). This was her eighth double-double this season (ninth of her career), narrowly missing her second triple-double (the eight assists were her third most in a game in 2010-11).
• Julie Seabrook (6 points/1 rebound). She was 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and has now made five of her last eight threes over the last three games; she has made at least one 3-pointer in three straight games for the first time in her career. Overall she is 8-of-18 (44.4), all 18 attempts coming this season for the CU junior.
