February 05, 2011 | Tennis

BOULDER - In a matchup between future Pac-12 Conference opponents on the tennis court, the No. 48 University of Utah Utes won the doubles point, then secured four of the six singles slots to defeat the Colorado Buffaloes, 5-1, late Friday night at The Meadows Club.

The Utes won their second straight match in as many days improving to 2-3 overall, the Buffs fall to 1-2. CU lost to Utah for the first time in four matches and trail in the overall series, 12-10.

"We definitely had our shots at certain positions at certain times and we need to capitalize when these opportunities arise," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.  "We look forward to playing more teams of this quality. We'll continue to work hard and get ready to play next weekend."

Utah won the doubles point taking two of three points at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions for a 1-0 lead. CU managed a win at No. 3 as the freshmen tandem of Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio defeated Sarah Pham and Lexi Provancha, 8-2. It was the first dual match victory for Janssens and Manzi Tenorio and improved their doubles record to 5-2 for the year.

In singles, the Buffs evened the score at one with freshman Kristina Schleich defeating Lucia Kovarcikova in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 slot.  Schleich is now 2-1 on the season and improved her overall win total to 10 victories. The 10 wins ranks second on the team.

From there on, the No. 48 ranked Utes won the next three of five matches in straight sets.

At No. 2, junior Michala Hedelund Jensen pulled the upset in the first set defeating No. 60th ranked Evgenia Kryuchkova, 6-1, however fell in her last two sets, 6-2, 6-4. It was Hedelund Jensen's first loss of the season in three matches and first match loss dating back to last October.
