Buffs Tied For Fourth At Bandon Dunes
March 11, 2011 | Men's Golf
BANDON, Ore. - The University of Colorado men's golf team opened with one of its finest rounds of the season and managed the next round in challenging conditions as the Buffaloes find themselves in fourth place after 36 holes in the Bandon Dunes Championship here on the central Oregon coast.
No. 27 Washington has a comfortable eight stroke lead over No. 4 Florida through two rounds, with the pair the only schools under par. The Huskies lead with a 10-under 566, while the Gator turned in a 574 total. No. 37 Oregon is third (581), with Colorado and No. 40 Oregon State tied for fourth with 588, or 12-over par scores.
Tournament play was not affected by the tsunami waves that reached the west coast of the United States after the devastating earthquake in Japan, though the sirens did sound overnight and tournament officials kept a watchful eye.
Junior Sebastian Heisele is pacing the Buffaloes, as he carded a 4-under 68 to open play on the 6,798-yard, par-72 Bandon Dunes course layout, following it up with a 5-over 77 for a 1-over 145 total, which has him tied for 11th. He had six birdies and just two bogeys in his morning round, flipping that in the afternoon with two birds and seven bogeys; the winds picked up after lunch and with cool temperatures, the conditions were tougher for most of the players the second time around the track.
Sophomores Derek Fribbs and Jason Burstyn are tied for 21st, in through 36 holes with 3-over 147 scores. Fribbs card for the day had eight birdies, 17 pars and 11 bogeys, while Burstyn recorded one of just six eagles in the tournament, along with two birdies and a team-best 26 pars against seven bogeys.
Senior Luke Symons also opened with a 4-under 68 on the strength of five birdies and 12 pars, but had some struggles in round two, enduring six bogeys and three doubles for a 12-over 84; that has him tied for 42nd with an 8-over 152 score.
Junior Kevin Kring rounded out the Buff effort Friday, as CU's stroke average leader coming in (73.4) uncharacteristically recorded a pair of 81s; that has him tied for 82nd with an 18-over 162 log. His streak of no holes with a triple bogey or worse this season came to an end after an incredible 331 holes (18-plus rounds) when he scored a triple on the 199-yard, par-3 No. 12. He had been one of just a handful out of 6,600 golfers who had not scored a triple or worse in college golf in 2010-11. He did score 20 pars, but was undone by 13 bogeys and a second triple in round two (also on a par 3) while managing just one birdie.
"The course played a little more difficult in the afternoon, so Derek and Jason really played well posting the scores they did," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We opened strong thanks to two solid efforts from Luke and Sebastian. We just had to take that high number (the 81) that caused us to have such an inflated score in the second round, but that was the case almost across the board."
The numbers back up the CU coach's assertion. In the first round, there were 15 subpar rounds, 23 par or better, with just 12 of 80 or higher; the second time around, there were just five subpar round (12 par or better), with 27 in the 80s (and another six 79s) in the 91-man field. The 75.37 average in the first round zoomed to 77.22 for the second.
"It was good to come out the way we did," he added. "We've had some good practices and the guys are starting to come around. We just have to get a little more consistent. They wanted to come out here this week and play solid; we have a big stretch run of tournaments coming up, and playing well here could get things started for us."
Washington's Charlie Hughes had no problems in the morning or afternoon, as his 67-68-135 scorecard leads the field by seven shots. His 10 birdies and 25 pars headlined the Huskies play, which have three UW players in the top seven.
The final round is scheduled for tee time starts in lieu of a shotgun for the field Saturday morning.
Note: This tournament is an "Under Four Sanctioned" event, where methods are applied to play a round of golf in less than four hours rather than the usual five-plus hours for a collegiate round. This is the fourth such tournament with the rules (challenging to playing ready golf in a unique way, ridding the game of idle time, etc.), with length of play in the other three drastically reduced.
