Golfers Tied For Eighth At Oregon Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Colorado men's golf team, playing in its second straight tournament in challenging weather, hung tough here Monday and stand in a tie for eighth place after two rounds of the Oregon Duck Invitational.
No. 1 Oklahoma State, in fourth place through 18 holes, caught fire in the second round, turning in a 9-under par 279 for the best single team round of the day for a 570 total (6-under). That's good for a three stroke advantage over No. 28 and host Oregon (573), with No. 22 Washington (576) and No. 39 Oregon State (581) lurking.
Colorado was tied for 10th following the morning round and moved into eighth place with a 595 total (19-over) after turning in the fifth best second round score. The weather was cold and wet throughout both rounds, with rain off and on as the temperature hovered in the mid-to-upper 40s; the golfers marched on while Oregon actually cancelled a baseball game with San Diego due to "unplayable conditions."
Senior Luke Symons is pacing the Buffaloes, posting his second best 36-hole score of the season after carding a 71-72-143 (1-under) on the 7,020-yard, par-72 Eugene Country Club course layout. That has him tied for 11th place in the 88-man field as he enjoyed an extremely steady day in the conditions, tying for team bests with five birdies, 27 pars and only four bogeys.
Juniors Sebastian Heisele and Kevin Kring are tied for 28th after turning in identical 74-73-147 (3-over) scorecards. Heisele also had five birdies, with 23 pars and eight bogeys on his round, while Kring had three birdies, 27 pars and six bogeys; playing as an individual with his score not counting toward the team total, Kring all but erased the memories of his last outing, when he didn't break 80 all three rounds and scored his first triple bogeys of the season after playing 331 holes without one.
Sophomore Jason Burstyn is tied for 56th (77-75-152; 8-over), scoring two birdies and 25 pars against eight bogeys and a double; sophomore Johnny Widmer recovered from a rough start (6-over after 10) to post a score of 79-77-156 (12-over, tied for 71st; he had three birdies, 20 pars, 11 bogeys and two doubles); and sophomore Derek Fribbs rounded out the CU effort with a 76-83-159 score (15-over), as he had two birdies and 20 pars countered by 11 bogeys and three doubles.
"Today was a decent but not great day for us, though we are in a good position to move up the board in the final round so the guys did a solid job of putting us in position to do that," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Luke and Sebastian played solid throughout the day. Jason was consistent as well and it was good to see Kevin get it back. Unfortunately for the short term, it was as an individual but he did some good things out there. Johnny and Derek struggled for the most part but we expect those guys to come out ready to play solid tomorrow. We are looking forward to playing a strong round to get us up into the top five or six."
Oregon State's Alex Moore zoomed from 24th after the first round into the lead, thanks to a 63 for n 8-under 136 total, two ahead of Washington's Chris Williams. Moore actually had two bogeys in his round of 63, which included nine birdies and an eagle as he put up a 28 on the front nine (he started on No. 3 and closed with two birdies).
The third and final round of the tournament is set for a 9:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start Tuesday. The Buffaloes will then head south to San Diego to participate in the Barona Collegiate Cup this Thursday and Friday.
