March 05, 2011 | Tennis

DENVER  - The University of Colorado women's tennis team dropped their third match in a row falling to in-state rival Denver, 4-3, late Friday night at the Pinehurst Country Club.

The Buffaloes won the doubles point taking a 1-0 lead, however the host Pioneers took four of the next six singles slots to beat CU for the second time in the last three years.  Denver broke a four-match losing streak improving to 4-7.

Earning singles wins for the Buffs were freshmen Kristina Schleich and Carla Manzi Tenorio. In doubles, junior Michala Hedelund Jensen and senior Abbie Probert picked up a win, along with Manzi Tenorio and freshman Winde Janssens.

Schleich earned her second consecutive win at No. 1 singles and seventh victory of the spring campaign defeating Sophia Bergner, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Schleich won her 15th match of the year and now has won six of her last seven singles matches.

At No. 5 singles, Manzi Tenorio also played a three-set match defeating Natalie Dunn, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0(6) for her 11th triumph of the year. Manzi Tenorio has won three of her last six.

In doubles, Hedelund Jensen and Probert once again improved their overall career win record moving up on the CU record book ladder. The pair collaborated for an 8-4 at No. 2 over Emma Isberg and Steffi Rath.

Probert moves into a seventh place tie with former CU standout Camila Belassi with 61 doubles victories, while Hedelund Jensen picked up her 40th win to reach 25th overall. The current CU pair has seven wins together this year.

Also reaching the winners circle in doubles were Janssens and Manzi Tenorio. The CU tandem this season are the team's most successful in terms of wins, earning their ninth win of the year and fifth of the spring season. They defeated Natalie Dunn and Caroline Schnell in an exciting 9-8 (7-3) decision.

Colorado (3-6) hosts their final Big 12 Conference opener next Sunday, March 13 against Oklahoma before another three-game road trip that will take the Buffs to Texas A&M (March 18), Texas (March 20), and a non-conference matchup at LSU (March 23).
