Fribbs Wins Front Range Individual Championship

ERIE — University of Colorado sophomore Derek Fribbs rode a first round, 4-under 68 to the title here Sunday as he captured the inaugural Front Range Individual Championship tournament.
Conceived by area golf coaches to get in some competitive local action, four schools participated Saturday at the Eisenhower Blue Golf Course on the Air Force Academy campus, with CU and AFA continuing the meet Sunday at Colorado National Golf Club; Denver and Wyoming competed in Saturday's round. Only individual scores were kept for the 36-hole affair.
Fribbs matched his season best round with the 68 at Eisenhower, and then followed it up with an even-par 72 at CU's home course for a 4-under 140 total. That bested two teammates for the title, as sophomore Jason Burstyn was second with a pair of 71s for a 2-under 142, while junior Sebastian Heisele turned in a 73-72—145 (+1) scorecard.
“This was a really good weekend to stay in Colorado and compete to get ready for the remainder of the season,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “It was much better than qualifying as it was a tournament that will count towards individual rankings. Derek and Jason played well and we are proud to have the top three finishers from the event.
“Getting the opportunity to play at Eisenhower in some cold weather was good for us and will pay off at Bandon Dunes next week,” he added in referring to CU's next meet, the Bandon (Ore.) Dunes Invitational. “It was also good experience for the guys coming back next fall who will likely be competing at the Air Force event in September.”
The high temperature Saturday was 38 degrees, with winds gusting from 10-12 miles per hour, making the wind chill around 30; it warmed to 47 Sunday with about the same wind, making it a more comfortable 42.
