Relphorde, Spears Named CU Athletes of the Week
March 08, 2011 | General, Men's Basketball, Men's Golf, Tennis, Women's Basketball, Women's Golf
Relphorde impressed as the Buffs went 1-1 against Nebraska and Iowa State this past week. To cap off the regular season, the Chicago native put up a game-high 19 points and contributed five rebounds and four steals (enough to tie the season-high) at home versus Nebraska. He was also perfect on the free throw line in route to helping Colorado defeat their biggest league rival. In CU's loss at Iowa State, he scored a personal conference best 21 points and added seven rebounds in the effort. His two-game total of 40 points was a season best, and he shot 46.4 percent from the field, 61.5 percent from the three-point arc.
Spears led the Buffaloes to a 1-1 record as CU fell to the No. 3 Baylor Bears and defeated Nebraska on the road. In her last regular-season game as a Buff, Spears recorded 23 points, nine rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists in the 59-81 loss to BU. Despite the loss, Spears has made her presence known as a dominant player at Colorado proven by the record books. She became the second player in school history to reach 500 points in three seasons (521), missing out only her freshman year when she scored 472 points. She also had her 106th career game in double-digits (43 20-plus games), and has scored double digits in 27-of-29 games this year. The California transplant moved into third place all time in career blocks (148) as well.
Also nominated this week were CU golfers Derek Fribbs (men's golf) and Jessica Wallace (women's golf), and Carla Manzi Tenorio (women's tennis).
Fribbs captured the winning title in the inaugural Front Range Individual Championship Tournament Sunday. His first round, 4-under 68 score tied his season-best round. This new tournament took place on the Eisenhower Blue Golf Course on the Air Force Academy campus with hopes of increasing the local competition in the state. Fribbs followed this performance with an even-par 72 at CU's home course for a 4-under 140 total on the weekend.
Wallace helped lead the Buffs to a fourth place team finish in the Juli Inkster/San Jose State Spartan Invitational. Her seventh place, 7-over par finish gave her a sixth consecutive round with a top 10 finish, the second longest streak in CU history (and only one behind current teammate Emily Talley). Wallace shot a 71-79-73=223 on the tournament. Wallace now has five at even par and seven under par in 20 rounds on the season.
Freshman Manzi Tenorio captured both a singles and doubles victory as the tennis team fell 4-3 to Denver. She defeated Sophia Bergner 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles for her 11th match of the year. She later teamed up with fellow freshman Winde Janssens for their ninth victory of the year, defeating Natalie Dunn and Caroline Schnell in a 9-8 (7-3) decision.
