BOULDER - Five University of Colorado Buffaloes are among the 93 Big 12 Conference student-athletes who have earned the inaugural Dr. Gerald Lage award, the league's highest academic honor.

Ashley Babcock (skiing), Jamie Befort (women's golf), Emily Hanenburg (women's track & field), Levi Knutson (men's basketball) and Kelly Menachof (soccer) each received the honor after lettering at least one season and  passing 100 hours of credits while maintaining a 3.80 or better cumulative grade-point average at the time of their nomination.

Babock, a senior from Edwards, Colo., is studying geography and environmental studies at CU. She competed in the alpine events for the Buffaloes from 2008-11 and was a three-time Division I National All-Academic Ski Team member.

Befort, a junior from Westminster, Colo., is double major in integrative physiology and business. Just underway with her spring season, she is a two-time CU Outstanding Academic Achievement Award winner and a 2010 NCGA All-American Scholar.

Hanenburg, a senior distance runner from Colorado Springs, Colo., is a studio art major. She is a member of the Dean's List and the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and has also been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field First Team three times (2008, 2009, 2010).

Knutson, a senior guard from Littleton, Colo., is a finance major and was recently named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men's Basketball Second Team. The 2011 co-Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year, he is also a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member.

Menachof, a native of Castle Rock, Colo., completed her two-year playing career at forward for Colorado in 2009, after transferring from the University of California. She is completing a degree in integrative physiology and was a 2009 Academic All-Big 12 selection.

The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the OSU faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions, in 1985-86, 1993-94 and most recently in 2003-04.

Lage had been a member of the Oklahoma State family since 1966, when he joined the College of Business Administration as an assistant professor. During his tenure at OSU, he served as the director of graduate studies in the department of economics (1974-77), head of the department of economics and finance (1978-84), director of the OSU Center for International Trade and Development (1985-87), and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the college of business administration (1997-2004).
