Bosshard and Coburn Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER- Joe Bosshard and Emma Coburn, two of the University of Colorado's top distance runners, won Big 12 Conference individual titles at the final Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla. this past weekend earning them each a CU Athlete of the Week accolade for competition during the week of May 9-15.

Joe Bosshard, a sophomore from Crested Butte, Colo., set a pair of Big 12 Championship Meet records in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. Bosshard's 10k time of 28 minutes, 52.85 seconds shattered the former Big 12 meet record (29:23.67) by more than 30 seconds and eclipsed the John Jacobs Track Complex Stadium record of 28:56.9 that had stood since 1978. He became just the third Buff to win a 10k Big 12 title, following in the footsteps of Brent Vaughn (2006) and Kenyon Neuman (2008). He managed to become the first CU male athlete to win both the 5 and 10k Big 12 titles in the same season. With Bosshard's help, the Buffs placed eighth with 52 points, 20 of those recorded by him.

Emma Coburn, a junior from Crested Butte, Colo., won her second straight Big 12 3,000-meter steeplechase title in 9:57.39, the second fastest time in meet history. She beat her competition by 17.90 seconds as KU's Rebeka Stowe finished in 10:15.29. The Buffs have won the last three steeplechase titles and four of the last five.
