Bosshard and Coburn Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors
May 18, 2011 | General, Track and Field
Joe Bosshard, a sophomore from Crested Butte, Colo., set a pair of Big 12 Championship Meet records in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. Bosshard's 10k time of 28 minutes, 52.85 seconds shattered the former Big 12 meet record (29:23.67) by more than 30 seconds and eclipsed the John Jacobs Track Complex Stadium record of 28:56.9 that had stood since 1978. He became just the third Buff to win a 10k Big 12 title, following in the footsteps of Brent Vaughn (2006) and Kenyon Neuman (2008). He managed to become the first CU male athlete to win both the 5 and 10k Big 12 titles in the same season. With Bosshard's help, the Buffs placed eighth with 52 points, 20 of those recorded by him.
Emma Coburn, a junior from Crested Butte, Colo., won her second straight Big 12 3,000-meter steeplechase title in 9:57.39, the second fastest time in meet history. She beat her competition by 17.90 seconds as KU's Rebeka Stowe finished in 10:15.29. The Buffs have won the last three steeplechase titles and four of the last five.
