Coburn, Bosshard Named CU Athletes of the Week
June 13, 2011 | General, Track and Field
BOULDER -Emma Coburn and Joe Bosshard have been named CU's Athletes of the Week after earning All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa. This is Coburn's fifth athlete of the week honor this year, her eighth overall, while this is Bosshard's fourth time earning the award this year.
Coburn won her first NCAA title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 41.14 seconds, beating out Virginia's Stephanie Garcia, the runner-up, by more than six seconds (9:47.29). Coburn became the second Buff to win the title in the last three years. CU has won the NCAA steeplechase title four times in the last six years as former Buff Jenny Barringer won it in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
Bosshard raced to his second All-American honor in the 10,000-meter run on Friday night, finishing eighth overall with the fourth-best time in CU history at 28:41.56. He ranks fourth on a prestigious list behind Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein (27:38.50), Ted Castaneda (28:30.6) and Bret Schoolmeester (28:33.31). Bosshard came back to run in the 5k less than 20 hours later and finished 13th overall in 13:55.67. He earned second team All-American honors for that performance.
Also, CU's CUSPY (CU Sports Performers of the Year) Awards Committee followed its bylaws to consider the performances of spring sports athletes after the CUSPY's, which were held April 26. As was the case in 2009-10, Coburn's accomplishments in the Big 12 Championships, in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships and in the NCAA Championships merited her being named CU's Co-Female Athlete of the Year with skier Eliska Hanjkova. Coburn won the 2011 Big 12 steeplechase title and had the fastest time at prelims two weeks ago. She ran a personal best of 9:40.51 on May 1 at the Stanford Invitational and at that time it was the world leading mark. The time is currently 13th in the world.
