Colorado Plays To A 2-2 Draw With No. 22 Auburn

September 16, 2011 | Soccer

DENVER - Amy Barczuk and Caroline Dannneberg each scored goals for Colorado, but No. 22 Auburn equaled the Buffaloes step-for-step as the teams settled for a 2-2 tie at CIBER Field in the first match of the Denver Invitational on the DU campus.

Although Colorado, 2-4-1 overall,  remains winless in its last five (0-4-1), the  Buffaloes fought even with a team that had entered Friday's contest on a five-match winning streak and its best Soccer America national ranking since 2006. Auburn, sporting a 1-0 win over No. 5 Duke on its resume, moves to 5-1-1 overall.

Colorado head coach Bill Hempen made a move early, starting Barczuk up front at center forward, instead back on defense. Hempen was looking for more physical play from his forwards, and the move paid off early on.

Barczuk had a tremendous game and had three of Colorado's seven shots on goal. She accounted for the game's first goal on a nifty turn around shot in the 29th minute.

With Auburn attempting to clear the ball out of its own end, Barczuk stepped in front of a Tiger defender just above and to the left of the '18. After gaining control, she dribbled away from the goal 25-yards out where she then quickly turned to her right and blasted a left-footed shot into the upper right hand corner of the net, past Tiger goal keeper Aimee Golighly.

"The move up top was a small adjustment, but coach likes to work us in different areas, see what will work," Barczuk said. "It was fun to play."

Barczuk's physical play up front started rubbing off on her teammates. Anne Stuller showed some aggressiveness up front crashing the Auburn goal several times, and registering two of CU's four shots on goal in the first half.

However, in an evenly played game, Auburn had its chance to respond. After a foul on CU's Amy Steiner, Katy Frierson set up for the Auburn free kick 22-yards out, just to the left of the goal. Once the wall in front of her started shifting, she found an opening on the near side while CU goal keeper Annie Brunner was still blocked off by the wall in front of her. Frierson's boot curved just inside the near pole to even the score at 1-1 in the 32nd minute.

Danneberg gave Colorado the lead back in the 52nd minute with her first career goal. The senior defender, playing in her 69th career game, set up for a free kick 35-yards out after Auburn's Mary Nicholson received a yellow card. Danneberg lofted a high ball, hoping to connect with a teammate for a scoring opportunity. Instead, the ball bounced untouched right around the penalty kick spot. Golightly mistimed her approach on the ball, and it bounced over her head, and into the net for a 2-1 Colorado lead.

"We really challenged our players pregame," Hempen said. "(We're) a team that just can't get a break but we are a team that does not give in. We could have won...effort had never been an issue."

Ana Cate had the equalizer for the Tigers in the 66th minute. Maddie Barnes gained possession of the ball just on Colorado side of midfield and sprinted down the middle of the field. She found Cate between two CU defenders at the top of the box, and tied the game with a shot in the upper right corner of the net.

Neither team scored again, but both had great scoring chances.

Just minutes after Danneberg's goal, Barczuk had another shot from 35 yards out that took a fantastic leaping punch at the ball by Golightly to save.

Kate Russell had a free kick in the first overtime bounce off the cross bar. In the second overtime, Russell appeared to have a clear shot at a game winner in front of the goal, but slipped as Stuller's pass approached, allowing the Auburn defense to get in front. Russell maintained possession and found Carly Bolyard open on the right side of the '18. Bolyard had a great look, but her shot went off the cross bar.

The Tigers had several good chances as well. Frierson set up for another free kick from 35-yards out with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, but this time Brunner saw it the whole way.  Frierson and Mary Coffed also had solid shots in overtime just sail over or wide of the CU goal.

In all each team put seven shots on goal. Auburn had a slight edge in overall shots, 16-14 with Tiger Tatiana Coleman leading all players with six, two of which were on goal.

"I don't feel bad that we tied but I don't feel great because we didn't win," Hempen said. "But in perspective with the breaks we've been getting, this team could have laid down and they have chosen not to, and I am proud of them for that."

Colorado returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18, as the Buffaloes return to CIBER Field to play CSU Bakersfield in the third game of the Denver Invitational at 3 p.m.
