Barczuk, Schoolcraft Named Athletes of the Week
September 21, 2011 | General, Men's Golf, Soccer
BOULDER - Colorado soccer's Amy Barczuk (junior) and men's golfer Beau Schoolcraft (junior) both receive recognition for their athletic accomplishments for the week of September 12-18.
Barczuk, originally from Centennial, Colo. (Arapahoe), led the women's soccer team to a tie and win this weekend at the Denver Invitational. Contributing two goals and six shots, the 5-foot-10 junior helped her team break its four game losing streak.
Barczuk scored the first goal of the game on Friday and gave her team the lead when the Buffs took on No. 22 Auburn. In the 28th minute, Barczuk gained control of the ball at the top of the box and buried a quick turn-around shot past the Tiger's goalkeeper.
CU head coach Bill Hempen played Barczuk at center forward to start the game to get more physical play out of his offense, a move that certainly paid off for the Buffs. Barczuk again gave the Buffs a 1-0 lead early in Sunday's win against Cal State Bakersfield off a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Barczuk now leads the Buffs in goals (3) and points (7).
Schoolcraft, of Englewood, Colo. (Kent Denver/UCLA), played in his first tournament for the Buffs over the weekend at the AFA Miranda Falcon Invitational. After transferring from UCLA two seasons ago, Schoolcraft was the co-medalist this weekend at 11-under par 205 after a final round 1-over par 73. Playing as an individual, the 5-foot-9 junior's 36-hole total of 132 (66-66) equaled the best mark in CU history, matching John Lingberg's effort at the Robertson Homes Inv itational in Stockton, Calif., in October 1987. Schoolcraft's 205 on a par 72 also matched the school mark currently held by two other Buffs.
Also nominated for this week's award: Kerra Schroeder (volleyball), Jenny Coleman (women's golf), Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio (women's tennis), Rodney Stewart (football).
Volleyball: Kerra Schroeder, Jr., San Diego, Calif.
Junior Kerra Schroeder led the Buffs with 40 kills total in the three matches for CU. She added 24 digs and served up five aces in nine sets. Schroeder averaged 4.44 kills, 2.67 digs and 5.17 points per set. In a three-set loss to No. 1 Cal she led CU with 14 kills and had eight digs and a pair of aces for 17.0 points. Against No. 2 Stanford she led CU with 13 kills and had seven digs and three aces for 16.0 points.
Women's Golf: Jenny Coleman, Jr., Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.
Junior Jenny Coleman finished tied for fifth at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic and helped the Buffs to a second place finish as a team at the season-opening event. With the team's second-place finish, the Buffs have now had 11 straight top 5 finishes in the regular season. For Coleman, it was her first career top five finish and first career top 10 finish. In regular season events, she has now finished in the top 20 in five of the last six events dating back to last year. She shot her first two rounds at the Ptarmigan under par, with a 1-under 71 in the first round and 2-under 70 in the second. It's just the 14th time a CU player has had multiple rounds under par in one event. Coleman has now accomplished that feat twice and is one of just five players in CU history to do that. Her 36-hole total of 141 is tied for the fifth-lowest in CU history. She is the 18th player in CU history to record a top 5 finish. She finished 3-over par 218 to match her career best 54-hole score and achieve her second sub 220, 54-hole score. Her two subpar rounds out of three rounds this year improve upon her ratio last year, when she had three subpar rounds in 35 rounds.
Women's Tennis: Winde Janssens, So., Peer, Belgium; Carla Manzi Tenorio, So., Cali, Columbia
Sophomores Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio teamed up for four-straight victories en route to the Doubles-A Bracket title at the three-day Kansas Invitational. Janssens and Manzi Tenorio defeated a pair of KU tandems, once in the quarterfinals, and the other in the finals. The CU pair defeated Arkansas State's Milosevska/Nowland, 8-6 in the first round, then narrowly defeated KU's Hernandez/Dreyer, 9-8(6) in the quarters. The semifinal match was another close encounter, this time edging Kentucky's Fox/Testerman, 9-8(2) before winning the championship over KU's Pezzotti and Los, 8-6 in the finals. The four victories for Janssens and Manzi Tenorio improves their two-year fall record to an impressive 8-2 together, and earned the pair their second straight fall tournament title in as many years as the duo won the CU Invitational last year.
Football: Rodney Stewart, Sr., Westerville, Ohio
Senior tail back Rodney Stewart moved into fourth place on CU's all-time rushing yards list after his 200 all-purpose yards in Colorado's 28-14 win over Colorado State. Closing the game with 2,967 total career yards, Stewart's 191 yards from scrimmage helped move him from fourth into second with 3,642, passing Bobby Purify (2000-04; 3,524) and Rashaan Salaam (1992-94; 3,469). He jumped from seventh into third in career all-purpose yards with 3,651, trailing only Eric Bieniemy (1987-90; 4,320) and Hugh Charles (2004-07; 3,622). He moved from 20th into 18th in total offense (2,990 yards). On the year, he still has more receiving yards (18-277) than rushing yards (61-223). His 9 punt return yards were the first in his career that came other than by rush or reception - his first return came on his 735th touch (671 rushes, 63 receptions).
