Men's Golf: Buffs Fall To Rams In Colorado Cup
September 26, 2011 | Men's Golf
HOLYOKE, Colo. - The University of Colorado men's golf team entered this year's third annual Colorado Cup with two tournament wins under their belts, and were primed to end rival Colorado State's reign in this Ryder Cup-style event, but it was not meant to be as the Rams walked away with a 6-4 win over the Buffaloes.
"We're obviously disappointed in the outcome, we came here expecting to win," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "This is an incredible opportunity for both programs in this head-to-head format, and CSU was just better today."
Colorado State captured the inaugural event by the same 6-4 score in 2009, and won 5½-4½ a year ago. But in the CU Mark Simpson Invitational and the Air Force Gene Miranda Invitational, the Buffaloes had bested the Rams by a cumulative 41 strokes, with a 6-0 record in head-to-head 18-hole team rounds, so it shaped up to be CU's year in the prestigious event. But CSU had other things in mind and defended its title.
"For whatever reason, we came out just a little but tight, but ultimately, we're two really good teams and they just won a few more holes than we did," Edwards said. "So they're happy and we're upset - but even though we lost today, we definitely got better. This is such a spectacular place and Rupert O'Neal (owner) is great to us and we're so grateful to him for allowing us to compete here. It is truly a privilege and I believe it sets us apart from other schools that we're able to do this."
One of the featured singles matches was between two of the top seniors, with CSU's Zakhai Brown edging Sebastian Heisele, 3 and 2, on the Ballyneal Golf & Hunt Club layout, a 7,147-yard, par-71 configuration in northeastern Colorado. Heisele had teamed with junior Beau Schoolcraft to topple Brown and CSU senior Mike Wuertz, 3 and 2, in the morning's Four-Ball match. CSU won two of those three and four of the seven singles matches to claim the 6-4 win.
The Buffaloes will leave Wednesday to compete in New Mexico's William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque this Friday and Saturday. No Colorado team has ever won or shared the title in three straight tournaments (the Buffs won their own Simpson meet and tied UNLV for the crown in the AFA event); national rankings should be computed for the first time following this weekend's tournaments across the nation.
