Hartman, Brown Named CU Athlete Of The Week

January 11, 2012 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Skiing

BOULDER - Skier Katie Hartman (senior) and men's basketball guard Carlon Brown (senior) are recognized as CU's Athlete of the Week for their performances the week of Jan. 2-8.

Hartman, making her first collegiate race in 11 months since tearing her ACL and MCL at the World University Games, won the giant slalom in the RMISA Qualifier race as part of the University of Colorado/Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational. Hartman followed that performance with a third place finish in the giant slalom race that counted toward team scoring for the Invitational, helping CU to a slim 239-236 advantage over Utah after the weekend was over. The Breckenridge, Colo. native was awarded a belt buckle for finishing third, especially significant for Hartman because it featured the name of her former teammate and roommate, Spencer Nelson, who passed away prior to last season.

Hartman was also named Primetime Performer of the Week by CollegeSports360.

Brown averaged 23.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on 59.3 percent shooting from the field (16-of-27) and 9-of-15 from three-point territory (83.3 percent) in leading the Buffs to a two-game sweep over Washington (87-69) and Washington State (71-60). The pair of wins allowed CU to start 3-0 in conference play in consecutive years for the first time since 1963. Against the Cougars, the Riverside, Calif. native scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, including a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc after halftime. Brown also grabbed a season-high seven boards in the contest. Earlier in the week, Brown led CU with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent) in the Buffs' win over the Huskies.

Brown was also named Pac-12 Player of the Week for his performances.

Also nominated this week were:

Chucky Jeffery, Women's Basketball, Junior, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Jeffery had season-highs for CU in their 75-67 loss to Washington by shooting 9-of-10 from the free throw line and recording six steals. She scored 20 points in the game. Jeffery scored 12 points and had nine rebounds in CU's 57-56 win at Washington State, becoming the 20th player in program histoy to reach 500 career rebounds.

Adam Zika, Skiing, Freshman, Prague, Czech Republic
Zika impressed in his first collegiate action, earning two top five finishes in men's giant slalom action at the University of Colorado/Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational. Because he's a freshman, Zika was unable in the first race to start in the top 15 of the race, due to the way points are calculated. He started 16th in the race for the RMISA Qualifier race on Friday and was able to finish fifth. He earned enough points to earn a spot in a random draw between start numbers 8-15 and was a little unlucky in getting picked No. 14, but from that spot he was able to finish second amongst collegians in some rough weather and hit the podium for the first time in just his second race at Colorado.
