Janssens, Roberson Named CU Athlete Of The Week

Helping the Colorado tennis team to a 1-1 week, Winde Janssens won a pair of singles matches this week in non-conference play. Her match against Houston was the clinching and deciding match in CU's come-from-behind win over the Cougars, 4-3, as Janssens defeated Celia Fraser, 6-3, 7-6(3). The following day, the Peer, Belgium (Agnetendal Kloosterstraat 27) native defeated Jithmie Jayawickrema of Stephen F. Austin, 6-2, 6-2, recording her second win of the week. Janssens also teamed with fellow teammate, sophomore Carla Manzi Tenorio, at No. 2 doubles for an 8-5 win against the Cougars. Overall, Janssens went 3-1 in her four matches played.
Forward Andre Roberson averaged 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game over the weekend, helping the Colorado men's basketball team stand at 1-1 after taking on USC and UCLA. Roberson had a team-high 13 points, in addition to a game-high 10 rebounds in the Buffs' 74-50 road win over USC. Roberson added two steals, one block, one assist, and shot 5-of-11 from the field against the Trojans. Against the UCLA Bruins, the San Antonio, Texas (Wagner) native collected 12 points with another game-high 10 rebounds and a career-high four steals. He also added two blocks and two assists. The pair of double-doubles were his 12th and 13th of the season, placing him with a total of 18 career double-doubles.
Also nominated for this week's award: Joe Morris (track and field), Eileen Gehring (track and field) and Chucky Jeffery (women's basketball).
Junior Joe Morris broke the 60-meter dash tape in 6.77 seconds this Saturday at the Air Force Team Challenge, helping the Buffs to a second-place team finish. Morris won the first heat by .05 seconds, defeating Utah Valley's Allah Laryea-Akrong (6.82). Placing second in the 200-meter race, Morris finished in 21.41 - just a fraction of a second behind UNC's Evan Taylor.
Freshman Eileen Gehring won the women's 400-meter dash after racing to a personal record of 56.17 at the Air Force Team Challenge over the weekend. Also a member of the women's mile relay that raced to the third-fastest time in school history (3:50.00), Gehring, along with teammates Mattson, Emily Elliott and Bridget Sweeney, defeated Utah Valley's relay by just over 3 seconds (3:53.03). Gehring also helped CU record 20 points as the Buffs took third in the team race.
Junior Chucky Jeffery scored 19 points and hit the game-winning free throws with 1.2 seconds left in the game, helping the Buffs defeat USC at home on Thursday. Jeffery had 14 points and tied a team season high with six steals in the overtime loss to UCLA on Sunday. Moving into 10th place in career steals, Jeffery now has 30 career games with three or more steals, including both games this weekend.
