BOULDER - Volleyball's Alexis Austin and cross country's Blake Theroux were awarded CU Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday for their athletic performances during the week of Oct. 22-28. CU's Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Silk, Horizon and International Delight.
Austin helped the volleyball team to a 1-1 record last weekend, which included a three-set loss to No. 3 Oregon and a four-set win against Oregon State in Boulder. The freshman led the Buffs in kills in both matches, hitting eight against UO and a career-high 18 against OSU. She also hit .204 against the Beavers and added seven digs, four blocks and a pair of aces (also a career-high). The Houston, Texas native had a solid match against the Ducks, totaling six digs and a block.
For the weekend, Austin averaged 3.71 kills, 1.86 digs, 0.71 blocks and 4.43 points per set. ?She also hit .135 over the two games. The Buffs have now recorded four conference wins this season, three more than last year, and are now tied for seventh in the league with Arizona and Arizona State.
Theroux recorded a seventh-place finish to lead the men's cross country team to their second straight Pac-12 Conference Championship on Saturday in Santa Clarita, Calif. Theroux, a sophomore, finished the 8k course in 23 minutes, 40 seconds. The Chesapeake, Va., (Western Branch) native helped the Buffs, who are ranked second in the nation, defend their title from last year as the team recorded a score of 49. Colorado defeated third-ranked Stanford by placing 7-8-9-12-13 overall.
This is Austin's fourth CU Athlete of the Week honor of the season and Theroux's first.
Also nominated for this week's award: junior Lizzy Herzl (soccer), junior Shalaya Kipp (women's cross country) and freshman Christian Powell (football).
Herzl scored her third career goal on Friday as the Buffs defeated the Arizona Wildcats 3-0 in Tucson. Heading in her first goal since the 2010 season, the Littleton, Colo., (Heritage) native scored off a Shaye Marshall corner kick to give Colorado an early lead in the 19th minute. The Buffs tied a season-high with three goals in the game and picked up their eighth shutout of the season.
Kipp led the 21st-ranked CU women's cross country team with an 11th place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. She completed the 6-kilometer course in 20 minutes and 36 seconds and was the only scorer in the meet who returned from last year's varsity roster that won the 2011 Pac-12 title. This year, the women's team finished behind four of the top six teams in the country with a fifth place finish and a score of 124.
Powell had 20 rushes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the football team's game against the No. 2 Oregon Ducks. He had 10 carries for 70 yards at halftime, with all of those carries being against UO's No. 1 defense. He had the rest of his yards in the third quarter against a mix of Oregon's No. 1's and No. 2's.
